After that, the consciousness that arises, along with the fifty-one mental factors that grasp at "I" and "mine," is what is meant by "mind," that is, "The mind is the ālaya-vijñāna, the one that grasps at 'I' is the mind." This also agrees with what is said in the Abhidharmakośa: "Whatever consciousness is immediately after the six [consciousnesses] cease, that is the mind." For example, it is possible to know the sound of a bee, the scent of a flower, the touch, and the taste all at the same time when seeing a lotus, because the five sense consciousnesses, without conceptualization, simultaneously grasp the object. At that time, the part of the consciousness that is non-conceptual and clear is the ālaya-vijñāna. In an instant, when joy or sorrow arises towards the object, it appears as conceptualization. Therefore, the part of the five senses, the ālaya-vijñāna, and the non-conceptual clear appearance of the sixth [consciousness] ceases, and the grasping part, the mind consciousness, is conceptual. It arises momentarily, and a second one does not enter. That which arises is called "mind." Although it is said that the six [consciousnesses] cease from the part where non-conceptualization transforms into conceptualization, in reality, the ālaya-vijñāna with the sense consciousnesses, each of their aspects or parts, does not diminish but remains as it is. The part that sees form is always the eye consciousness, and its nature is non-conceptual, so sounds and so on should also be measured and known. The perfectly established reality that is not inverted is the path with undefiled results, because it goes correctly and, having gone to the place of going, does not return. These details should be understood as the great chariot with scriptures. The second, the establishment of specific acceptance, is that knowable things are made into five bases: the base of form, the base of mind, the base of mental factors, and the differences between these three, the temporary dharmas, and the unconditioned. Regarding the views of these, there are two: those with aspects and those without aspects. Those with aspects are that the base of form, all that appears as form, is the appearance of the aspect of form due to the habitual tendencies of mind and mental factors. It is not a substance other than consciousness. Thus, the appearance of the five objects such as form, and the two moons and so on that are known as fabricated, are also the appearance of the five sense consciousnesses and their mental factor retinues. The horses, cattle, and so on in dreams are also the appearance of non-conceptual delusion and its mental factor retinues.
