Accomplishing solely the benefit of others is great. Accomplishment is great when it involves the union of skillful means and wisdom, while separation is small. From the perspective of aggregation, without skillful means, the separation from wisdom leads to falling into the state of a Hearer (Śrāvaka). As it is said. Also, in the Ratnāvalī (Precious Garland): In the Hearer's vehicle, there is no explanation of the aspiration and conduct of a Bodhisattva, nor the complete dedication. How can it become the Great Vehicle? This, with compassion alone, connects the realm of existence until enlightenment. Thus, skillful means, compassion, and wisdom do not abide in either extreme, thereby transcending both existence and peace. As stated in the Abhisamayālaṅkāra (Ornament of Clear Realization): Wisdom does not abide in existence, and compassion does not abide in peace. So it is. Is wisdom merely the realization of the selflessness of the individual? Or is grasping half of the Dharma, realizing the absence of inherent existence, the Hearer and Solitary Realizer (Pratyekabuddha), which is small? Realizing the emptiness of both self and phenomena is the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva. Diligence is small when one abandons the benefit of others due to weak interest in a short time. Diligence with great interest for a long time is as stated in the Sūtrālaṅkāra (Ornament of the Sutras): Even for the sake of a single virtuous thought of others, one is not weary even for hundreds of millions of eons. As it is said. And in the Bodhicaryāvatāra (Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life): For limitless sentient beings, over a long time, the bliss of the Sugatas is unsurpassed. Fulfilling all that is thought in the mind, what need is there to mention constant giving? As it is said, and earlier: Carrying the great burden of sentient beings on their heads, it is not pleasing for the supreme heroes to walk slowly. Since self and others are tightly bound by various bonds, it is appropriate to exert a hundredfold diligence. So it is. Skillful means is small when it is the means of seeking peace for oneself alone, while the opposite is great. As stated in the Abhisamayālaṅkāra: Those Hearers who seek peace, who are led to near peace by omniscience, and those who benefit beings, who accomplish the benefit of the world with the knowledge of the path. So it is. Accomplishment is small when it is only one-sided peace, while the great Nirvāṇa that does not abide is great. As in the story of the wish-fulfilling gem tree: Being attached to one-sided peace, being truly pacified in the Dharmadhātu, the Nirvāṇa that does not abide is superior to the small ones, spontaneously accomplishing both one's own and others' benefit, like a wish-fulfilling
