Therefore, because the fruits of karma are completely used up, the fruits are wasted, and because they will be used up, they are called unused. They believe that because the enjoyer or the one who enjoys is the one self, it is also not impermanent. Therefore, they say that the self exists in the self of the person that cannot be said to be either permanent or impermanent. This way is not good, because if permanence is prevented, there is no way to establish impermanence; and preventing impermanence also depends on establishing permanence; and it is impossible to be neither permanent nor impermanent, so it is unreasonable. The Sravaka Vaibhasikas accept five bases of knowable objects that are different substances. That is, the base of form, the base of mind, the base of mental events, non-associated formations, and the unconditioned. The first is the form that can be seen and has resistance. That is, the indivisible atoms of earth, water, fire, and wind, the real objects that truly exist, gather around and include intervals, thereby establishing what is coarse. The forms that cannot be seen but have resistance are the five senses of eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, and sound, smell, taste, and touch. The forms that cannot be seen and have no resistance are the vows that pervade the body as a whole, like a fire burning in a forest, non-vows, and what is included by the intermediate. These atoms are composed of four elements on the outside and four atoms of color, smell, taste, and touch, for a total of eight parts. The body's sense organ has these eight parts, and its own atom, for a total of nine existences. The eye's sense organ and other sense organs have the previous nine on top of them, plus the eye's own atom, for a total of ten existences. That is, even if the atom is destroyed by force, analyzed and eliminated by wisdom, the thought of clinging to the atom will not disappear, and it will abide in the nature of ultimate truth, so it is a real object of ultimate truth. The coarse thing is destroyed by force, and because of the distinction of parts, the thought of clinging to it disappears, and it has the nature of conventional truth. Therefore, it is a conventional object, as stated in the Abhidharmakosha: What is destroyed and analyzed by wisdom, after eliminating it, the thought of it does not arise, like a pot and water, is conventional truth, and the opposite is ultimate truth. The base of mind is the six consciousnesses of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. That is, the objects perceived by the five senses.

When the five sense faculties are seen, the five consciousnesses cognize those objects. The mind consciousness also ascertains the past, future, and the distinction of objects, etc. If consciousness does not see objects, then consciousness is unobstructed, and therefore it would be an overreach to see things that are obstructed by veils, etc. As it says in the same text: "The eye sees forms with a basis, but it is not the consciousness that relies on it, because there is obstruction, therefore it does not see forms." Mental factors (2) The basis of arising is: contact, attention, feeling, perception, volition, desire, conviction, mindfulness, concentration, wisdom, faith, shame, embarrassment, non-attachment, non-hatred, non-ignorance, diligence, pliancy, conscientiousness, equanimity, non-harming, attachment, anger, pride, ignorance, view of the aggregates, doubt, anger, resentment, concealment, vexation, deceit, cunning, jealousy, stinginess, arrogance, harm, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, lethargy, excitement, disbelief, laziness, carelessness, forgetfulness, distraction, non-intelligence, regret, sleep, investigation, analysis, these fifty-one mental factors. These mental factors are also similar because their respective leaders are consciousness, and they enter the same object, so their object is the same; they decide in the same way, so their form is the same; they arise at the same time, so their time is the same; they rely on the same master faculty, so their basis is the same; just as one person does not generate more than one eye consciousness at one time, so its retinue, such as contact, does not generate more than one, so their substance is the same. Because there are five similarities, they are the same. Observing the meaning of the faculty, just as consciousness knows the meaning of objects, so they also know the difference of objects. Because neither the mind nor the mental factors manifest the image of objects, the grasper and the grasped meet, and they must arise simultaneously. Neither the mind nor the mental factors are external knowledge.
