Being free from six kinds of bad treatises, possessing the great meaning of accomplishing temporary happiness and ultimate liberation, and the three treatises of accomplishing enlightenment and abandoning all the sufferings of samsara, are in accordance with the Buddhas. The ways of expressing these meanings are: treatises that gather the scattered into one, reveal the hidden, extensively explain various terms, indicate difficult points, clarify the order of words, briefly indicate the meaning of words, distinguish the upper and lower sections, and so on, with countless orders, divided into chapters, distinctions, sections, and verses, in prose, verses, mixed texts, and continuous order, the sections of different parts of the scriptures are clearly made into small, medium, many, and large, and the Buddha's teachings are most clearly revealed, divided into four types: direct meaning, indirect meaning, hidden meaning, and interpretable hidden meaning, so that the teachings may abide for a long time. As it is said in the commentary: All dharmas are included in sutras and treatises, well-spoken and their commentaries, by virtue of which the teachings of Shakya, will abide long in this world. The definition is: In Śāstra (ཤ་ཏྲ་), Śa (ཤ) with the suffix Sa (ས) means to tame; Tra (ཏྲ) with the suffix Ya (ཡ) means to protect. Possessing the qualities of taming and protecting. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: Because it possesses both taming and protecting, it is a great treatise. The necessity is: to clarify the profound and difficult to understand contents of the Buddha's words, and to indicate the path to liberation, thereby guiding beings. As it is said in the commentary: The meaning of the Buddha's words is very clear, possessing the benefit of liberation, the treatise is very vast, and the wise take it with respect. The difference between the Buddha's words and the treatises is: Any Dharma that is taught, arising from the Buddha's own causes and conditions, possessing the excellent path of accomplishing the two benefits, is the Buddha's word. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: Whatever is meaningful, close to the Dharma, in the three realms, speaks of abandoning afflictions, whatever praises the qualities of peace, that is the sage.

I say it is the opposite. Thus it is said. Whichever way of Dharma does not rely on the circumstances of the teacher Buddha, but is composed by an individual gathered from other lineages, in the interpretation of any of the Buddha's words (༼༢༽) and treatises, to clarify the path to liberation, that is a treatise. As it says in that very text: Whoever is the teacher, controlled solely by the Victorious One, spoken by a mindful person without distraction, in accordance with the path to attaining liberation, that too is accepted with the crown of the head, like the words of a righteous person. Thus it is said. There are three ways of how to teach and listen, among which the characteristics of the teacher, the master, are: As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: A spiritual friend is disciplined, peaceful, extremely peaceful, diligent in virtues, especially rich in scriptures, thoroughly understanding, skilled in speech, possessing compassion, abandoning weariness, and should be relied upon. And as stated in the Vajra Arrangement Tantra: The teacher is full of treasures, complete like a river, possessing vows and commitments, with a loving heart, wise and diligent in benefiting others, the Vajra secret master, should be relied upon in every way. Thus it is said. The characteristics of the disciple who listens are: As stated in the scriptures: Respectful to the lama, with completely pure morality, extremely diligent in meditation and recitation, strict, gentle, patient, and possessing, guarding vows, abiding in Dharma, well spoken. And as stated earlier: Fortunate, respectful, and generous, with a steadfast and broad mind, and diligent in practice, supreme Dharma, compassionate, possessing commitments, should be known as a Vajra disciple. Thus it is said. The nature of common Dharma practice is that initially, one generates the mind of enlightenment, the main part is remembering the meaning of what is heard, and the conclusion is dedicating the merit to enlightenment. In these three ways, if it is a Sutra, one listens in the state of seeing appearances as the eight examples of illusion, and if it is Mantra, one remembers what is heard without distraction, in the state of visualizing the deity and mandala being taught and listened to clearly. At that time, the mind abiding without distraction, focused solely on the words and meaning of the Dharma, is quiescence, and the individual manifestation of the nature of the words and meaning, and understanding the meaning, is insight. As stated in the Sutra of the Array of Qualities: Manjushri, in this very listening ༼༡༽ holding the mind single-pointedly without distraction, is the samadhi of quiescence that accords with the sound, and distinguishing and clearly examining each is the
