Generally, the appearance of existence, samsara and nirvana, is said to be the mind of bodhichitta, which is (1). Without moving from the state of oneness of awareness, it is in accordance with the Dharma, and considering the play, power, and adornment of awareness as self-appearance, it is labeled as mind, just like labeling the sun's rays as the sun and then saying to stay on the top of today. There are two things that can harm reality. From the perspective of reasoning, it would be a mistake to see colors and directions in the mind, because there are colors and directions in appearance; and the mind would be scattered outwards, and appearance would be drawn inwards, so they would be confused with each other; and when one dies, the vessel and its contents would die at the same time, etc. There are very many absurd harms from reasoning. () It can also be harmed by scripture, as it says in the Mirror of the Mind of Samantabhadra: "To think that appearance is the mind is to deviate from me." And in The Self-Arising of Awareness: "Why do you think that all kinds of things are the mind? Because everything arises, all kinds of things are the mind." () Will the fruit of Buddhahood arise or perish? Will sentient beings not become Buddhas? () For example, black charcoal, even if you wipe it, will not turn white. Therefore, even if you practice meditation, sentient beings who are confused will not become Buddhas. And in The Tantra of the Gathering of Definitive Meaning: "The fools who have not seen the definitive meaning say that appearance is their own mind, like turning copper into gold." So it is said. () Here, nowadays, those who claim to understand Dzogchen, and some practitioners of the common vehicle, think that appearance is their own mind, which is a huge mistake that does not distinguish between sects, because mind and bodhichitta are not the same thing. Mind is the adventitious defilement of the three realms, including the eight aggregates and mental factors. Bodhichitta is the self-arising wisdom of awareness, without things or characteristics, and is the dharmadhatu of all samsara and nirvana. Here, the appearance of samsara and nirvana is the power or play of bodhichitta, so saying bodhichitta is just applying the name of the result to the cause. Know that what appears as samsara and nirvana is the power of awareness, and know that awareness itself is not established as either samsara or nirvana, and the plan of appearance will not stop. Know that the clear appearance without object appearance is neither the mind nor something other than the mind, but is the empty and clear, baseless, primordial purity. At the time of liberation, because the power and play are baseless, they are naturally purified like waking up from a dream. () Self-awareness, the unchanging original nature of the Dharmakaya, does not move, things.

One should know the distinctions and characteristics clearly. Such distinctions are not found in anyone else these days except for me. Some consider it to be the mind, others consider it to be something else, but there is nothing beyond that. Here, even one's own school cannot decide, because it asserts that talent, play, and adornment appear as its essence. Among these, talent is the power of awareness, that is, the separate appearances of samsara and nirvana, just as the single ray of sunlight opens the lotus and closes the night-blooming lotus. Play is playing with the sound of awareness, like a lamp playing with light, or the sun playing with rays. Adornment is the self-appearing arrangement, appearing as self-arising adornments in the face of awareness, like rainbows in the sky, and the sun, moon, planets, and stars adorning the sky. These are also stated in the Kunsel: "The essence of talent is unceasing." And, "Unceasing, non-dual abundance, I have shown as the essence of play." And, "Therefore, beauty is called adornment." Incidentally, the detailed explanation has been shown. Now, to show that awareness itself is not established anywhere: Just as the nature of objects is without appearance, so too is the nature of the object-possessing bodhicitta. Its essence is like the sky, and it should be known as beyond speech, thought, and expression. The essence of awareness, the basis for the arising of samsara and nirvana, is not established anywhere, like the sky. The Kunjed says: "Bodhicitta is the nature of the sky, all dharmas are bodhicitta, that example is, all examples are the nature of the sky." And so on. The way of abiding in the self-face of non-existence is: In the self-arisen wisdom, the essence of meaning, there is no cause and effect, therefore the precipice of samsara is cut off. Without good or bad, samsara and nirvana abide in equanimity. Without straying or obscuration, the three realms are discerned. Awareness, like clear crystal, in its naked essence, has no cause and effect, therefore the precipice of falling into samsara and happiness and suffering is cut off from the beginning. All of samsara arises from the unceasing appearance of cause and effect. The self-nature of awareness is not established in any cause and effect, therefore there is no straying or obscuration, no good or bad, so however samsara and nirvana may appear, they abide in equanimity in the face of awareness, because in reality they have never existed, so the mind is at ease. From the state where awareness does not exist anywhere, how it appears and abides, although similar, it has never existed, it is primordially liberated. Merely realizing that point and abiding in oneself, even if one clings to it as becoming a Buddha, in reality there is no good result.
