The initial bodhicitta. From the first to the seventh bhumi, it is the bodhicitta of pure intention. In the three pure bhumis, it is the bodhicitta of complete maturation. In the state of Buddhahood, it is the bodhicitta of abandoning obscurations. Although in the state of Buddhahood, there is no bodhicitta that arises from rituals or that is newly attained, there is the bodhicitta of accomplishing the benefit with great compassion without exceeding the time, and the ultimate bodhicitta exists because emptiness, which is not abandoned, exists, and because there is no cause for deterioration in attaining the ultimate bodhicitta. Therefore, whether or not bodhicitta exists in the state of Buddhahood should be understood in this way. Why do the names change in the four stages? It is said that it is established from the aspect of parts. In the accumulation and application stages, it is the very nature of that element. Because it is measured as the general meaning through aspiration, it is said that bodhicitta also arises from aspiration. From the first to the seventh bhumi, because the obscurations of the element are partially purified, it is said that wisdom is vast and intention is pure. In the pure bhumi, the five gates and the knowledge of the base are completely purified, and because the aspiration and qualities are vast, it is said to be the bodhicitta of complete maturation. That Buddha-bhumi, free from obscurations of the element, is called the bodhicitta of abandoning obscurations. The four stages are established from the aspect of whether or not there are obscurations on the element. In the accumulation and application stages, the base and the eight consciousnesses, together with the habitual tendencies, obscure the element like the sun and make it invisible. Because one believes in the explanation, one makes faith and aspiration the general object, and therefore it arises from aspiration. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: "The ultimate of self-arising is to be realized only through faith." From the first to the seventh bhumi, because the afflicted mind is reversed, one sees hundreds of thousands of twelve kinds of pure lands and qualities, and because one part of the obscurations of that element is purified, it is like the appearance of sunlight through the clouds. In the eighth bhumi, because the mind-consciousness is reversed, one attains non-conceptual wisdom, and in the ninth, because the five sense consciousnesses are reversed, the pure land is purified, and in the tenth, because the base consciousness is reversed, one obtains mastery over the perfection of wisdom, and therefore it is called complete maturation. Finally, the habitual tendencies of mind and mental factors, together with the base consciousness, are reversed, and one attains the wisdom of the Buddha.

It arises. Since there is no consciousness of samsara in the state of Buddhahood, it is like the sun freed from all clouds, and all the qualities of that realm are manifested. Even the pure Bodhisattvas are beyond their realm of activity. As it says in the Uttaratantra, "The Buddha-nature and the enlightenment of the Buddha, the qualities of the Buddha and the activities of the Buddha, are not even to be thought of by pure beings." Now, the way to generate the mind of enlightenment is: there are two ways to generate it, taking it in the presence of the supreme Lama and the Three Jewels. When taking it from the Lama, he explains the Dharma, including the preliminary seven branches and taking refuge. The main part is to request the Buddhas, the Buddha-sons, and the supreme Lama: "Please listen." Then, recite: "Just as the Buddhas and their sons of the past generated the mind of enlightenment and abided in the training, so too, for the benefit of beings, I generate the mind of enlightenment and abide in the training." This should be recited three times. The way to generate the mind of enlightenment is that some noble individuals take it themselves in the presence of the Three Jewels, while most take it from the Lama. The way of taking it is the same. Later, when restoring or generating it again and again, it can be done in the presence of the Three Jewels other than the Lama. If taking it from the Lama, then after stating the faults of samsara, the benefits of liberation, the nature of the mind of enlightenment, etc., one transforms the mind. One performs the preliminary seven branches extensively, or just recites "As many as there are" from the Bhadracaryapranidhana. Then, one requests the great Vajradhara Lamas who reside in the ten directions, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and the great Bodhisattvas who reside on the great earth: "Please listen." "I, named so-and-so, from this time forth, until I reach the essence of enlightenment, just as the Sugatas of the past generated the mind of enlightenment, so too, for the benefit of beings, I generate the mind of enlightenment. I will also train in the Bodhisattva's training in stages. I will liberate those who have not been liberated, I will free those who have not been freed, I will give breath to those who have not breathed, and I will establish sentient beings in Nirvana." This is recited three times. Thus, generating the mind of enlightenment, its supreme benefits are immeasurable.
