Thus, taking refuge encompasses all Dharma practices. Now, let's differentiate these individually. Firstly, the object of refuge is the Three Jewels themselves. As the causal object, it is the Three Bodies of the Buddha, endowed with abandonment, realization, and activity, which have already appeared in other continuums. The Dharma is the two truths of cessation and path. The Sangha are the noble bodhisattvas who have entered the bhumis. Temporarily, we take refuge in these three equally. The causal object that aids oneself in accomplishing Buddhahood is the nature of the Three Jewels, the complete activity of the Three Bodies of the Buddha. The path is the two, cessation and path. The Sangha is requesting help from the Sangha who have entered the noble grounds, therefore it is the Three Jewels. In terms of the ultimate, the object is abandonment and realization. Ultimately, it is the sole Dharmakaya of the Buddha. It is the ultimate refuge. Because the Path Truth is conventional, and bodhisattvas have obscurations. Therefore, besides the Buddha, what ultimate refuge is there? The Buddha's Rupakaya is also conventional, and is impermanent and changing, so only the Dharmakaya is the ultimate truth. The Dharma is also, the Path Truths are abandoned when higher bhumis are attained, so it is a conventional truth. Bodhisattvas also have obscurations, so they still need to take refuge in the Buddha. Therefore, it is not an ultimate refuge. The Uttaratantra states: "The Dharmas, the two, and the assembly of the noble ones, are not a constant supreme refuge. The refuge that goes to the ultimate meaning is the Buddha alone. Because the Thus-gone One possesses the Dharmakaya, the Sangha is also the result of that." That is to say, the body of the Buddha residing in Akanishta is the Sangha, the speech is the sacred Dharma, and the mind is the Dharmakaya, therefore it is a refuge, so the wise ones think. The uncommon, the fruit refuge is the Three Jewels. It is a prayer for accomplishment in oneself. It is focusing on the spontaneously accomplished Buddha of clear light who will manifest in the future. The aspect of aspiration is the fruit refuge and the object. Moreover, aspiration is different from bodhicitta. Bodhicitta is for the benefit of others, while this is for one's own benefit, and so on. The distinction of ascertaining the differences in the respective ways of these refuges is, as the cause of

By taking refuge as the cause, one desires to accomplish the refuge of the precious fruit in one's own continuum. One takes refuge in the Buddha as the teacher, in the Dharma as the path, and in the Sangha as companions. The common refuge of the cause becomes the cause for the unobstructed accomplishment of the extraordinary refuge of the fruit. That is, one acknowledges the protector and refuge by regarding the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the path, and the Sangha as companions. Having thus identified the object, the manner of taking refuge is: Having thus known the object of refuge, one takes refuge. "In the sky in front, contemplate the precious ones to the utmost, and offer them with oceans of actual and mentally created offering clouds. I and all sentient beings join our palms and think of taking refuge in the three. To the Lama, Buddha, Dharma, and supreme Sangha, I go for refuge three times." In the sky in front, in the center adorned with lotus stems, sun, moon, and lions, contemplate the root Lama residing in the position of the complete-named Vajradhara, surrounded by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas like dense clouds, and make offerings with actual and mentally created offerings, and perform prostrations, confession of sins, and supplications. I and all sentient beings, joining our palms and pervading the surface of the earth and the limits of space, contemplate taking refuge in the Lama and the Three Jewels, and recite with pleasant words: Having gone for refuge, its benefits are that temporary wishes are fulfilled, one becomes a Buddhist, and a basis for all Dharmas. As the "Seventy Verses on Refuge" says: "All vows are possessed, but those who have not gone for refuge do not have them." One is not harmed by humans or non-humans, and is protected from the view of the perishable aggregates of cyclic existence, and from the inferior path of one-sided peace. The "Noble Banner Sutra" says: "Protecting from all harms, and from the inferior vehicle of perishable aggregates, for the sake of protection, refuge is taught, as the supreme refuge." Wherever one is born, one will be born at the feet of the supreme Lama and the Jewels.
