When a hundred years have passed, one sesame seed is taken out, and when the sesame seeds are exhausted, that is the lifespan of the water bubble hell. The remaining hells are said to be twenty times longer. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "From a sesame seed pile, after a hundred years, one seed is taken out and exhausted, that is the lifespan of the water bubble hell, the lifespan of other hells is twenty times longer." Next is the second place of the lower realms: the preta, suffering from the torment of hunger and thirst. Those with external obscurations, even when seeing good things, they dry up. Those with internal obscurations, their lungs and heart burn. The common obscuration is that food and drink are attributed to the mind. For twelve years, they do not hear the sound of water, and they appear to be harmed and protected by others. Always desiring food and drink due to hunger, they are called pretas. There are three types: those with external obscurations, even pleasant places appear unpleasant. Medicine trees, forests, great rivers, etc., merely seeing them causes them to dry up, appearing as charred wood and other rough things. The seasons are also reversed. The Letter to a Friend says: "For pretas in the summer, even the moon is hot, and in winter the sun is cold." Those with internal obscurations, fire burns from their stomachs, burning all their internal organs, and smoke and flames billow from their mouths. The common obscuration is that the common obscuration is the desire for food and drink, unable to endure hunger, and even for twelve years they do not hear the sound of water. Even if they see water, it dries up, or it appears to be protected, and they have no power to use it. Their bodies are as large as Mount Meru, but their mouths are as small as needle eyes. The snot, phlegm, and impurities discarded by monks and brahmins, blessed by mantras, even if a little enters their mouths, they cannot enter at first. After entering, they suffer from burning and so on. Even if they drink the ocean, it does not reach their throats, and they dry up due to the poison in their mouths, etc. On top of countless sufferings, they are also harmed by others, and their bodies and minds suffer much damage. The Admonition to a Friend says: "The mouth is the size of a needle's eye, and it is difficult to fill the stomach with many yojanas. The poor, large-bellied ones drink the water of the great ocean, but it does not reach the wide throat, and the poison in the mouth dries up the moisture of the water." Their lifespan is "a hundred human years is one day for a preta," "their own lifespan is five hundred years, constantly experiencing all kinds of suffering. A hundred human years is one day for a preta.

The self-age calculated in total is five hundred years. The Suhrllekha says: 'The noose of karma from evil deeds, some sentient beings bound tightly, cannot be released even in five thousand or ten thousand years.' This is calculated in human years. The third place of the lower realms, animals also devour each other, harm and exploit, slaughter and cut down, suffering is abundant. Lifespan is uncertain, there are kalpas and so on. Animals generally reside in the ocean, with different shapes and forms, like wine dregs, scattered in the abodes of gods and humans, birds and wild animals, horses, cattle, livestock, sheep, etc., these devour each other, harm each other, slaughter for the sake of skin, bones, and meat, use for plowing, milking, and wool, etc., and load burdens that cannot be borne, etc., suffering is endless. Some nagas have a lifespan of one kalpa, others are uncertain in an instant. There is no happiness even in the heavens, for a while, each of the four continents, people also have no time for happiness, birth, old age, sickness, and death, enemies and harm are abundant, separation from loved ones, longing and poverty, experiencing what is not desired, wishes not fulfilled, severe cold and heat, fatigue and exhaustion, repaying kindness with harm, not knowing gratitude, retinue acting wrongly, meaningless jealousy, not praising, meaningless slander is immeasurable. In the human realm, whether large or small, all have endless harm that is adapted to their respective sizes, especially in common there is birth, aging, being attacked by severe illness, death, encountering enemies and being robbed and attacked in life, harm, separation from loved ones and relatives, longing for possessions and children, etc., but not being rich and being poor, diseases and demons, etc., unwanted things befalling, wishes for possessions, dwellings, and fame, etc., not being fulfilled, fatigue and exhaustion from work and roads, etc., severe cold and heat, burdens, and affairs, those who have bestowed kindness harm in return, and those who have done favors do not know how to repay, great people and virtuous spiritual friends are also disturbed by the retinue and disciples doing various discordant things, being slandered by others who are jealous for no reason, and the worries of fame from slander, etc., suffering is immeasurable. Lifespan is uncertain, if the sound is unpleasant, then years
