The six perfections are: Generosity, with the intention to give away what one possesses to others, along with virtuous actions. Discipline, with the intention to abandon non-virtuous aspects, along with virtuous actions. Patience, without anger towards harm from others, with the intention of enduring, along with virtuous actions. Diligence, with joy in virtuous deeds, along with actions. Meditation, with the mind focused on a single object, along with actions. Wisdom, understanding the meaning of the words and teachings of the Dharma, along with actions. Practicing all of these while perceiving appearance but without inherent existence is the perfection. The action of generosity is that those things are obtained by others. Similarly, not harming others, not responding with anger, practicing virtue, the mind abiding and generating calm and insight, and having no doubt after realization are actions. Knowing that nothing is established and acting within the collection of appearances is the wondrous action of the perfection. As it says in the Bodhicitta Commentary: Having known that all things are emptiness, relying on the fruits of virtuous actions, this is more wonderful than wonder, this is more marvelous than marvel. Thus, one can also accomplish the vast benefit of sentient beings in samsara. As it says in the Light Increasing Sutra: Though abiding in equality with the patience of no-self, one generates great compassion for sentient beings. Though giving generosity to fully ripen, one does not hope for the ripening of karma. With thought, one always abides in nirvana, yet one's actions abide in samsara. Though one has realized that all things are emptiness, one trusts in the ripening of karma. So it is. Of these, the first five perfections are the accumulation of merit, and the last is the accumulation of wisdom. The first three are the cause, essence, and action of the discipline training. Meditation is the mind, wisdom is the training of wisdom, and diligence is the friend of all. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: Having mastered the three trainings, the Victorious Ones have taught the six perfections. The first three and the latter two are two different aspects. One also belongs to all three. Generosity and discipline are the accumulation of merit, wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom. The three others are two each, and all five are the accumulation of wisdom. So it is said. And in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life.

All these branches are spoken by the Buddha for the sake of wisdom. According to the Ornament of the Sutras, generosity is merit, wisdom is knowledge, the other four are both, or the first is merit, and the remaining five are wisdom. But here, it is as in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior. That is, whatever virtue is done, if it is accompanied by the three: the preparation of generating the mind, the main part of realizing no self-nature, and the subsequent dedication, then it is in accordance with liberation. If it is not accompanied, then in this stage of practice with faith, it is difficult to be a cause of liberation. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Mostly meaningless, meaningful, and always meaningful should be known." Therefore, if it is not accompanied by these three in the accumulation of merit, then it is mostly meaningless. From the first to the seventh ground, it is meaningful. In the three pure grounds, it is always meaningful, so the two great accumulations are completed. That is, from the first ground onwards, having obtained the ten powers, the immeasurable accumulations are completed. Below that, even if one strives, it is not fully completed. Here, the meaning is summarized as: Especially the great virtue of the Great Vehicle, the preparation is the generation of the mind, the main part is without object, and the subsequent is fully accompanied by dedication, these are the three jewels for traversing the path of liberation. The meaning of this has already been explained. Here, the skillful means of compassion is the compassion that exists at the time of whatever virtue is done. The wisdom of emptiness is simultaneously united, so there is no before or after. Some think that when meditating on the nature of reality, the compassion of preparation and the emptiness of the main part are united, but this is completely misunderstanding the direction. Uniting the past, which is non-existent, and the present, which is existent, is a cause for laughter. That is, the substance of mind that has obtained the generation of the mind and does not degenerate is compassion, and the essence of not focusing on anything is emptiness. Are these two substances of mind, which have the same essence but different aspects, united? Or is the non-object itself emptiness, and the compassion that has become non-object, the two become one taste, so it is considered a union without different essences. This is a very important point. The path of the Bodhisattva, summarized with its fruit, is: All actions are solely for the benefit of others, the view is like the sky, the eighteen emptinesses, the meditation is clear light, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the conduct is flawless, the six perfections, the fruit is the attainment of unsurpassed enlightenment. Whatever is done
