Harsh speech, covetousness, malice, and wrong views, etc., are the ten non-virtuous actions. The *Abhidharmakośa* says: "Killing is done intentionally, without error, it is the killing of others. Taking what is not given is taking the wealth of others, using force or stealth to make it one's own. Desiring to engage in what should not be engaged in, sexual misconduct is of four kinds. Lying is confusing the understanding of others, the meaning of the words is clearly understood. Divisive speech separates others, unpleasant speech is harsh, all afflictions are idle talk. Like evil Dharma, covetousness is attachment to the wealth of others through wrong thoughts. Malice is hating sentient beings, holding the view that there is no good or non-good, this is called wrong view." Such ten non-virtues, if practiced in a small way, result in rebirth as animals; in a medium way, as hungry ghosts; and in a great way, experiencing the suffering of hell, which is the result of complete maturation. The effect of acting in accordance with the cause is that one is born where one commits any non-virtuous action, and the experience is that of having a short life, etc. The dominant result is a place with thorns and unripe fruits, etc. If these are spoken of in part, the ripening is weak and one is liberated from the lower realms, the hundred paths." "Even if one attains the heavens, suffering will still be achieved. Killing leads to a short life and many diseases, taking what is not given leads to poverty and destitution, sexual misconduct leads to a household filled with enemies. The remaining karma, even if one is born in the heavens, leads to a short life and many diseases, poverty, and a household" "incomplete or ༼༡༽fond of sexual pleasure. The karma of speech: lying leads to much slander, divisive speech leads to the separation of friends and disharmony, harsh speech is unpleasant, and idle talk leads to impure speech. Even if one is without fault, one is often slandered, separated from friends, and the retinue is disharmonious, one only hears unpleasant words, and no one believes one's words to be true, these are the results of the four evil karmas of speech. The karma of mind: covetousness leads to unfulfilled desires in the mind, malice is always accompanied by fear, and wrong views are evil views. Whatever one thinks does not come to fruition, one is constantly fearful and cautious, and one is born into a lineage that denigrates the results of karma, these are the results of the non-virtuous karma of mind. Also, the *Precious Garland* says: Killing leads to a short life, taking what is not given leads to separation from wealth, committing theft.

With a miserly heart, one becomes allied with enemies; with false speech, one invites slander; with divisive words, one separates from friends; with harsh words, one hears unpleasantness; with idle chatter, one's speech is not dignified; with a covetous mind, one destroys hope in the heart; with a malicious mind, one bestows fear; with wrong views, one has only evil views. Thus it is said. As has been said before. Thus, the ten non-virtues are like poison, and those with wisdom should abandon them. Non-virtuous actions, whether done in public or in private, should be abandoned, for the fruits they produce will be the experience of harsh and intense results. As it is said in the "Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds": "Those who do evil are unseen, like eating poison in the stomach, there is no happiness. It is impossible for gods, yogis, and those with pure eyes not to see." Thus it is. Now, the virtues that are in harmony with liberation are explained. The path of liberation is to accomplish enlightenment and peace, to transcend samsara, and to abandon suffering. The virtues that cause liberation, that transcend samsara and abandon suffering, are: Those who enter the path of the three vehicles, what beings should cultivate well, are to generate the mind of enlightenment, cultivate the four immeasurables, practice the six perfections, cultivate the aspects of enlightenment, and diligently transform day and night into virtuous actions. Generating the mind to seek the path of the Hearers, from cultivating the first mindfulness to the complete practice, is the person of small capacity. Entering the path of the Solitary Realizers is the person of medium capacity. Generating the mind of enlightenment and entering the Great Vehicle is the person of great capacity. After the three types of people generate their respective minds, they practice the thirty-seven aspects of enlightenment, cultivate the four immeasurables, and diligently engage in virtue day and night, encompassed by the six perfections, and dedicated to others, these are called the virtues in harmony with liberation. Among them, the four immeasurables are: loving-kindness, wishing that sentient beings who do not have happiness may meet with happiness; compassion, wishing that those who are tormented by suffering may be separated from suffering; joy, wishing that those who have happiness may not be separated from happiness; and equanimity, having an equal mind towards those who are close, distant, loved, and hated. As it is said in the "Ornament of the Sutras": "Having compassion for all sentient beings, having the intention of meeting and separating, and having the intention of not separating, thinking of benefit and happiness, I pay homage to you." Thus it is. Gone to the other shore.
