"These two are mainly wisdom, and its preliminary is faith." Thus it is said. In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it is said: "For people without faith, white dharmas do not arise, just as a seed burned by fire does not produce a green sprout." Thus it is said. In the Uttaratantra Shastra, it is said: "The ultimate truth of self-arising is realized only through faith." So it is. Now, to explain the nature of faith in detail, first, the essence of faith is: the mind that is extremely pleased by focusing on the objects of abandonment and adoption through approach and withdrawal. In terms of classification: aspiring faith abandons and adopts cause and effect; admiring faith makes the mind extremely inclined towards the supreme object; respectful faith is endowed with supreme mindfulness; pure faith makes the mind extremely clear with virtues; believing faith eliminates doubts about the Dharma; decisive faith has particular faith in the supreme Dharmas of hearing, thinking, and meditating. In general, most treatises explain three types of faith: pure faith, aspiring faith, and believing faith. That is, having an extremely pure mind towards the Three Jewels, aspiring to abandon and adopt the Four Noble Truths, and having believing faith in the law of karma and its effects. Here, six types are explained: aspiring, admiring, respectful, pure, believing, and decisive faith. These are only differences in classification and summarization. Among them, admiring, respectful, and pure faith belong to the category of pure faith. Aspiring and believing faith belong to the category of believing faith. And decisive faith is aspiring faith itself, because by entering the true nature of the Dharma, the path of cessation without error, one abandons suffering and its origin, and desires liberation. First, the essence of aspiring faith is to have the desire to abandon and adopt samsara and nirvana. The etymology is that it is called aspiring faith because one desires white dharmas and is delighted. In terms of classification, there are three types: desiring to abandon the suffering of samsara, desiring to attain the enlightenment of liberation, and desiring to engage in the cause of these two through abandonment and adoption. The analogy is like a wealth-desiring person desiring to obtain wealth, desiring to seek the Dharma, thereby abandoning suffering and its origin, and entering the path and cessation. The sign is that one is not interested in worldly affairs and engages in hearing, thinking, and meditating. The benefit is increasing faith in the Three Jewels.
