Like: Entering the battlefield requires armor, fear requires a good escort, fighting requires an army, famine requires grain, doubt requires explanation, wandering requires a place to stay, and danger requires a protector. So it is said. In this way, through examples and reasoning, one should remember death in all activities such as walking, standing, sleeping, and sitting. In all activities such as eating, walking, sleeping, and sitting, one should focus on remembering death. When walking, because the movement of the feet is impermanent, one should encourage oneself to abide in the state of Buddhahood. When sitting, because abiding is impermanent, one should encourage oneself to abide in the unchanging state. When standing, because standing is impermanent, one should encourage oneself to arise from the state of equanimity. Eating and drinking are impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to take the food of samadhi. Dwellings are impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to dwell in the palace of Dharmakaya equanimity. Contraction is impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to contract conditioned activities. Extension is impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to freely enjoy the appearances that transcend the world. Sleeping is impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to sleep in the state of reality. When walking, the path is impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to enter the path of enlightenment. Fearful enemies are impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to conquer the enemies of affliction. The words spoken are impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to recite. The labor of farming is impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to constantly abide in Dharma practice. Food and drink are impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to offer to the mandala of the deities. Wealth is impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to accumulate the seven noble riches. Great fame is impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to always remain humble. Desirable objects are impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to engage in the activities of the two accumulations. Sentient beings are impermanent, so one should encourage oneself to place them on the path to enlightenment.

Therefore, let us encourage the growth of wisdom through learning, contemplation, and meditation! The Hundred Deeds Sutra says, "One should always remember the Lord of Death in all activities." And the Bodhisattvacharyavatara says, "Day and night, at all times, I should only contemplate this matter." And the Nirvana Sutra says, "Among all fields, obtaining the autumn harvest is the best." "Among all footprints, the footprint of the king of cows is the best." "Among all mental formations, the mental formations of impermanence and death are the best." "This can counteract all mental formations of the three realms." And the Vinaya Sutra says, "Giving offerings filled with resources to a hundred monks is not as good as a moment of thinking about the impermanence of conditioned phenomena." Now, the signs and measures of familiarizing with it are shown: The measure of familiarization is seeing conditioned phenomena as decaying, being diligent, abandoning fear and the affairs of this life, not staying in ordinariness even for a moment, generating renunciation and aversion, and having a narrow mind. From contemplating impermanence day and night, seeing everything that appears as decaying, therefore, from the depths of one's heart, a mind that does not cling to external objects arises, a mind that is diligent in virtue like a burning fire arises, and an extraordinary fear and dread of the suffering of samsara arises from the heart. Knowing that one cannot escape death no matter what, therefore, one abandons the affairs of this life, and does not stay in ordinary leisure even for a moment, but practices the Dharma with the three doors, and seeing the ripening of karmic results, renunciation and aversion arise. Because one knows that when death will occur is uncertain, therefore, one does not develop dependence on anything. These are the signs and measures of familiarizing with impermanence from the depths of one's heart. Now, to conclude with the benefits of such familiarization: Its benefits are extremely vast, it can abandon the faults of samsara, and virtues naturally gather. One is liberated from the clinging to permanence, pacifies the attachment and aversion to enemies and friends, is diligent in virtue, and knows that this life is illusory. One perfects the two accumulations, possesses fame, is seen by the gods, and ends life in happiness, going to higher realms. One quickly obtains the state of immortal nectar. When impermanence is well born in the continuum, aversion and renunciation arise for the phenomena of samsara, therefore, it has the benefit of turning the mind away from the phenomena of this life. The method of dispelling attachment is that no matter what, one does not
