Like a tree growing on a cliff, the demon water of the Lord of Death digs at it like a river. The body is like a dilapidated house in summer, and the demon rain of the Lord of Death collapses it like rain. The body is like an old tree on a cliff, and the black wind of the Lord of Death's elements blows it down. The body is like dry wood or resin, and the host of the Lord of Death's fire burns it. The body is like an autumn flower, and the Lord of Death's seasonal wind withers it, therefore one must always cultivate renunciation. As it says in the Sutra Requested by Shri Datta: The body is like a tree by the water's edge, swaying and moving. Like an old house, it must be maintained and repaired. Like a flowing river, it rushes towards the ocean of death. It is like a bubble, water plant, ripple, or mirage. Having examined it in this way, for this body full of faults, all self-grasping and craving for the body are reversed. All desires for life and so on are abandoned. Not looking at it, one practices the perfection of the other shore. Thus it is. Just as the sound of thunder and echoes in the mountains are loud but leave no trace, whether others praise or criticize me, I will not refute or affirm anything. Realizing that my own speech is also like an echo in the mountains, knowing that all dharmas are like this, I reverse the thoughts of liking and disliking. As it says in the Extensive Play Sutra: The qualities of desire are like sound, images, and echoes in the mountains. Even if heard, do not grasp at the characteristics, look to your own nature. Thus it is. Just as clouds, fog, and rainbows in the sky appear for a while but then vanish, all external appearances and internal thoughts of affirmation and negation appear suddenly and disappear suddenly, so learn not to cling to them as true. Seeing the coming and going of breath as the same, as it says in the Explanation of the Definitive Meaning Sutra: The coming and going and abiding of breath are impermanent, like clouds, fog, hail, and smoke. Look at how they vanish into their own place without cause. Thus it is. Thinking about the examples of people and animals who have died in the past and are dying now, and applying it to oneself, as it says in the previous sutra: Sentient beings are different from others, especially the human body, in other countries and in one's own lands. Seeing examples of relatives, enemies, and friends dying, it is foolish to not understand that one will also die. Thus it is. Observing the setting of the sun and moon and the extinguishing of lamps, the appearances of this life vanish, and the grasping of the self-luminous mind

After contemplating impermanence, as previously stated: The sun, moon, planets, and stars are moved by the wind, just as the flame of a lamp is swayed by the wind. This life does not stay for even a moment, so strive to accomplish whatever great deeds there are. Thus it is said. The Dharma (ཆོས།,धर्म,dharma,法) itself is a friendly army, so it is advised to rely on it: At the time of death, the friendly army is the Three Jewels, and the assembly of virtue. Rely on the holy ones and seek to accomplish the essential meaning. At the time of death and in the perilous path of the bardo, the refuge and friendly army are the holy lama with the qualities previously described. The supreme Three Jewels, Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. The supreme yidam, the mandala of peaceful and wrathful deities, and the assembly of dakinis. They lead the way and dispel obstacles, therefore they place one in the state of great bliss and liberation. Therefore, from now on, strive with great diligence to rely on these three supreme ones. Among them, what is indispensable to rely on is the virtuous friend, so one must rely on the supreme lama inseparably. What is indispensable as a place of refuge is the Three Jewels, so one must take refuge in them. What is indispensable for farming is practice, so one must practice virtue without bias. What is indispensable as resources are the two accumulations, so one must constantly and tirelessly accumulate them. What is indispensable as a dwelling is meditation, so one must build the fortress of shamatha and vipashyana. What is indispensable as a friend is a person with Dharma, so one must respectfully associate with Dharma companions. What is indispensable as a result is the three kayas, so one must diligently accomplish Buddhahood. As it is said in the Sutra of Advice to the King: "Great King, at that time, the Dharma will be an island, a dwelling, a protector, and a reliance. For example, for those threatened by cold, there is fire; for those threatened by heat, there is a cool palace; for those threatened by thirst, there is cool water; for travelers who are tired and weary, there is shade; for those who have embarked on a long journey, there is a vehicle; for sleeping, there is a good bed; for hunger, there is good food; for suffering, there is satisfaction; for those who have lost their way, there is a guide; for those afflicted by illness, there is a doctor; for those sinking in mud, there is a rope; for those carried away by water, there is a boat; for what is difficult to cross, there is a bridge; for dangerous places, there are steps; in dark places, there is a lamp; for the great ocean, there is a ship; for the poor, there is wealth; for those who work, there is a helper; for cutting, there is a tool."
