As the enlightened beings have said, "Small desires are the lineage of the noble, and the exhaustion of desires is the true noble, so always train in having small desires." It is like that. Also, due to change and impermanence, one is advised to generate renunciation, that is: appearing high with the wealth of the heavenly city, like the example of falling into the lower realms after death, when wealthy, do not be arrogant and conceited. Having enjoyed the bliss of the gods and falling into hell, having attained the wheel-turning king and being born again as a slave, having attained the joy of gods and humans and falling into the lower realms, etc., think like that. Do not be arrogant and conceited because you are slightly wealthy, but keep only the concept of impermanence close. As said by the master Nagarjuna: "All the spontaneously accomplished meditations, such as Brahma, etc., because they did not see the latent habits of self-grasping, later they will undoubtedly be born in hell." And "Even having become a wheel-turning king, one will eventually fall to the ground again, and in samsara, one will also be born as a slave." Etc. As for abandoning pride, in the Eight Branches of Medicine, in the worldly customs of "The Drop that Nourishes Beings," it says: "From those who accomplish liberation, the pull of karma is very far away, and various kinds of happiness and suffering are only now beginning to arise. When wealthy, do not be arrogant, and when impoverished, do not be discouraged." It is like that. Therefore, even in this life, think about the happiness of the first half of life and the suffering of the second half, etc. Wealth is of the nature of decline, youth is of the nature of impermanence, relatives and friends are of the nature of separation, know that everything is unreliable, and thus generate renunciation of impermanence. In the Extensive Play Sutra, it says: "These qualities of desire are like the moon in water, like reflections, like echoes in a valley, like mirages, like watching dances, know that they arise like dreams." And in the Nirvana Sutra, it says: "When there is prosperity, there is decline, when there is gathering, there will be separation, youth is also impermanent, and the color of prosperity is also taken away by disease, there is nothing that is permanent." And in the Ocean-Requested Sutra, it says: "All wealth will eventually decline, and all the enjoyment and power of kings are also impermanent." The appearance of the vessel and its contents is only temporary.

Generating renunciation by relying on impermanence: The changes of the four seasons and ages, both internal and external, also indicate impermanence. Knowing that death is certain, abandon the clinging to permanence. In the past, this Jambudvipa also went through the four periods of the Age of Perfection, the Age of Three Quarters, the Age of Two Quarters, and finally the Age of Strife. In a single lifetime, one also goes through the four stages of being born as an infant, being a young child, reaching adulthood, and becoming old and frail. In a single year, one also goes through the four stages of spring sowing and plowing, summer flourishing of leaves, autumn ripening of fruits, and winter drying and freezing of the earth, so everything is impermanent. In the teachings on impermanence, it is said: When the cool autumn season arrives, everyone is very happy, but no one realizes that their life is coming to an end. As it is said in the Extensive Play Sutra: The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the birth and death of beings are like watching a dance. In the Ugrapariprccha Sutra, it is said: These are like illusions, not real. All conditioned phenomena are like dreams. Therefore, always strive diligently to reach the other shore, the ten grounds, the ten powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the Dharma of the Buddhas. Generating renunciation of impermanence by thinking about the subtle, momentary changes: Form is a particle, time is a moment, impermanent like lightning in the sky, so quickly practice the sacred Dharma. It is not appropriate to cling to the gross appearance as real, because particles exist indivisibly, so gross things cannot be established. Do not give rise to attachment to external objects. The body is also composed of particles and has no parts; the mind is also momentary and has no parts, so do not cherish the body and mind that are taken as one's own. Do not attach to the illusory appearances of enjoyment as real. Do not harbor bad habits towards the various illusions of samsara. Because nothing has essence, one should generate strong renunciation of impermanence. As it is said in the Extensive Play Sutra: The life of beings is like lightning in the sky, flowing swiftly like a stream down a steep mountain. In the Great Nirvana Sutra, it is said: Life is constantly threatened by many enemies.
