All beings on this earth will surely become impermanent within a hundred years. All sentient beings die in succession, contemplate that one's own lifespan will also come to an end. Thus, the lifespan of Jambudvipa is uncertain, and fifty years have already passed, so life is short. If all the beings, such as humans and animals, that are now on the earth will surely die without exception within a hundred years, then one should abandon the mind of clinging to permanence and diligently practice the sacred Dharma from the heart. Furthermore, all sentient beings included in the three realms and six classes take bodies according to their own karma, and whether they are large or small, happy or suffering, virtuous or non-virtuous, rich or poor, high or low, etc., all appearances of good and bad, even if they can last for eons, will eventually die. Even if they are short, lasting only for a moment, they will eventually die. Even if they last for years, months, and days, they will eventually die. As it is said in the Nirvana Sutra: All conditioned things in the world, if there is birth, there is death; if there is gathering, there is separation; even if life lasts for countless eons, it will eventually come to an end. Thus, all sentient beings are impermanent and changing. If one hopes that only oneself is permanent, it is abandoning mindfulness. One should think that death is certain, and because one does not trust anything, one should cultivate the thought of non-attachment. As it is said in the Wisdom of Tara: All compounded things are impermanent, therefore one should diligently cultivate the thought of not being attached to anything. Showing impermanence by contemplating on many examples: In marketplaces, crossroads, and inns, people from all directions gather and disperse, and one should contemplate from the heart that gathering is sure to lead to separation. In places where many people gather for the sake of buying and selling, at crossroads, and in inns, all the people who gather seem to be permanent for a while, but they quickly disperse in different directions. Similarly, one should contemplate that all the gatherings of oneself, enemies, friends, and intermediate beings in one place are impermanent. Whether one gathers with parents, relatives, teachers, friends, or ordinary people, one should not fight, harm, speak ill, or scold each other while together.

There will be no regret when separating. Even when on the same boat, hold the thought of separation and do not fight, but be happy in your heart. Not to mention others, think of your own parents, spouse, livestock, guard dog, utensils, etc., who gathered in one house in your early life. At that time, it seemed like it would always be that way, clinging, fighting, and arguing, but where are they now? None are together, some have died, some have left, some remain, and some are facing separation. Therefore, no matter where you live, who you associate with, or what you do, keep the thought of separation in mind, and do not fight or harm anyone, but strive to do good. From the collection on impermanence: Since all that gathers will separate, one should not trust in anything. Towards beings and oneself, one should be without attachment or clinging. That is how it is said. Furthermore, like the example of towns that were once full of enjoyment and wealth becoming empty and desolate, accumulation will eventually be exhausted. Therefore, do not cling to any possessions, as they are impermanent and without essence. Reflect on the old, empty towns from your early life, middle life, and before. In those places, there were once wealth, happiness, joy, and delightful enjoyments, but in the end, they became like this. My wealth, houses, and possessions will not be any different. Moreover, since they will not be any different, my wealth and possessions will also be abandoned. I will abandon these, and these will abandon me. While there is still autonomy over these, they should be used for the sake of Dharma. By using them for Dharma, thinking that liberation will surely be attained, one should take the essence from the meaningless, fleeting enjoyments. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: At the same time as giving away everything, giving to sentient beings is the best. By giving away everything, one transcends sorrow. I will strive to transcend sorrow. That is how it is said. That is, since there will come a time when one has no right to use any possessions, one should give to virtuous deeds while one still has the right to use them, and one will obtain greater merit. Doing so at the time of death, like leaving a will for others, is of little benefit. When one is lying on the edge of the bed, disagreements among others over the distribution of one's possessions become the root of sin. Therefore, those who have renounced the world and have a mind for Dharma must first train in reducing their desires at the beginning of their Dharma practice.
