Therefore, the appearance of a Buddha is extremely rare. As stated in the Gandavyuha Sutra: "A world leader in the world, is difficult to find in hundreds of thousands of kalpas." It is also difficult to practice the Dharma as it is heard. It is as difficult as the appearance of the Udumbara flower in the world. It is even more difficult to enter the Dharma and encounter the correct path. It is as difficult as threading a needle with silk. It is even more difficult to practice properly after finding the path. It is as difficult as finding a wish-fulfilling jewel from an island in the ocean. It is even more difficult to find a true guru. Therefore, one should contemplate these and strive to practice. The metaphor of the Udumbara flower can be seen here as an intermediate explanation, which can be applied to the rarity of the appearance of a Buddha, and also to the difficulty of practicing and entering the sublime Dharma properly. Moreover, it is difficult to generate even for a moment the virtuous thought of "I will practice the Dharma." Know that generating such a thought is the compassion of the Buddha. For example, it is as difficult as lightning appearing in the darkness of night. The Bodhicharyavatara says: "Just as in a dark, cloudy night, a flash of lightning suddenly appears, so too, by the power of the Buddha, faith arises briefly in the world." Therefore, entering the gate of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles of Dharma is even rarer, like the Udumbara flower. It is even more difficult to encounter the unmistaken path to liberation, because most people are obscured by karmic obscurations, or are deluded by demons, and thus enter the wrong or inferior path. As stated in the Gandavyuha Sutra: "It is also extremely difficult to encounter the true Dharma." It is even more difficult to strive to practice as one has heard, as difficult as threading a fine needle with silk. As stated in the Sutra of the Buddha's Discourse: "Generating the mind of enlightenment with compassion, guarding the precepts with respect and risking one's life, believing in and admiring the meaning of emptiness, and diligently practicing ༼༡༽ these are also extremely rare." Putting all of these together, meeting a virtuous guru with the qualities mentioned earlier, and hearing the essential Dharma, is even more difficult than a captain finding a treasure from an island in the ocean.

Ah, one should always rely on (the guru), not disobey the teachings, act according to the instructions, and not cause even a moment of displeasure. One should strive to please him/her by all means and in every way. The Sutra of the Arrayed Tree says: "Son of good family, all your virtuous dharmas arise from relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. Such a virtuous spiritual friend is obtained by accumulating merit and wisdom for all the ocean-like eons, and then one will obtain the Dharma. Otherwise, it is even more difficult to meet him/her than to find the best of jewels. Therefore, one should always serve him/her with respect and without weariness." When the favorable conditions are gathered and one's mind is interested in liberation, abandoning meaningless activities and practicing will also become a cause for liberation. Except for virtuous deeds, one must abandon everything and strive for Dharma. Delusive activities are the cause of meaningless suffering. They are useless at the time of death and have no essence. Therefore, one must abandon them like a nest of poisonous snakes. Except for virtuous Dharma activities, one must completely abandon everything else and strive to practice the holy Dharma. Whatever worldly activities one does are meaningless and useless at the time of death. The nature of constant mental afflictions is like finding a nest of poisonous snakes, or finding clothes of someone who died from plague, or finding food contaminated with poison. As soon as one feels its nature, one must immediately abandon it completely. If one looks outward at worldly phenomena, one sees that everything is engaged in delusive tricks. To encourage looking at one's own mind and becoming accustomed to Dharma, the song of definite renunciation from samsara says: When looking outward at worldly activities, all that is done is the cause of meaningless suffering. No matter how one thinks, there is no benefit. Therefore, become accustomed to looking at one's own mind. So forth. The way to abandon non-Dharma activities is: The Great Nirvana Sutra says: Whatever is a non-virtuous aspect of Dharma, one must completely abandon it, just as great people such as Jews must avoid unclean things. One must abandon it as one cannot take a great blazing fire with one's hand. One must abandon it as Brahmins do not eat beef. Just as a person who is full of good food does not want bad food
