At that time, it would become permanent, and if it is admitted that it does not exist in ultimate truth, then it would become annihilation. The view of permanence and annihilation is the source of all faults, therefore it is prohibited. As it is said in the Root Wisdom: "The Blessed One, with his wisdom, in the teachings of Katyayana, has forbidden both existence and non-existence." Also, as it is said in the Precious Garland: "Furthermore, if one holds a wrong view on this, a fool, with the pride of a wise man, abandoning what should not be abandoned, will go to the Avici hell." Now, the characteristics of the Buddhist, the pinnacle of the Great Vehicle, the Madhyamaka-Prasangika school, are explained: The ultimate meaning of the Victorious One's intention, the Prasangika school refutes all elaborations, all phenomena are interdependent, empty of inherent existence, without self-nature. Through the door of the two truths, illusion, and freedom from extremes, the paths and fruits are perfectly accomplished. To show the intention of the Thubpa Bhagavan without error is the Madhyamaka-Prasangika. The first to open the way to lead its chariot was the prophesied by the Bhagavan in the Great Drum Sutra, the noble Nagarjuna, the sun of wisdom without stain, who dispelled the darkness of evil views. The commentators on the meaning of his six collections of reasoning are Aryadeva, Buddhapalita, Bhavaviveka, and Chandrakirti. Among them, the noble Chandrakirti, endowed with incomparable wisdom and compassion, understood the master's intention without error, and composed the commentary on the meaning of the Root Verses on the Middle Way, the Entering the Middle Way, and the commentary on the words, the Clear Words. Thus, in Jambudvipa, he caused the sun of the ultimate intention of the Buddha, the Madhyamaka-Prasangika, to rise, and cleared away the darkness of evil views. Here, the meaning of his scriptures, without error, is summarized and stated: Nothing whatsoever is established as inherently existent in its own nature. Since all assertions are accompanied by attachment to reality, the tenets of those who speak of inherent existence contradict their own accepted scriptures. And one who accepts the force of objects is refuted in his own system by what is conventionally accepted. And after refuting, there is no definite assertion like that of the Svatantrika.

So, if I have some vows, then I have these faults. Because I have no vows, I am completely without fault. Understanding it in this way, here, to ascertain its meaning, there are three points: the way of preventing elaboration by not accepting in nature; the way of establishing the appearance in name without preventing it; and showing other ways of establishing non-commitment and commitment. The first point is that all phenomena, how they arise, cease, abide, etc., from the very moment they appear, have no inherent nature, just like an image. Because there is no establishment or non-establishment, and no acceptance or rejection, etc., for those who assert things, in order to destroy all their tenets along with their clinging to reality, there are five great reasonings: the reasoning of separation from one and many; the reasoning of the vajra sliver; the reasoning of separation from existence and non-existence, arising and ceasing; the reasoning of preventing function; and the reasoning of great interdependence. In addition, there are the three reasonings of impermanence and annihilation, change and non-change, and preventing the four extremes. The first point is that this phenomenon that appears as real should be unestablished as either real or unreal, because it is separated from one and many, like a water moon. The way of separation is as previously stated. Moreover, the self-characteristic of what is to be refuted does not exist, because no phenomenon has inherent nature. However, here, it is merely preventing the false accusation of clinging to non-existence as existence. In the *Refutation of Disputes*, it says, "Because there is nothing to be refuted, I refute nothing. Therefore, saying that I am refuting, that is an accusation fabricated by you." The second point is that the phenomenon as it appears should be non-existent in reality, because it is separated from arising from self, other, both, and no cause, like a dream. That is, if a sprout arises from a seed, then it arises from a cause or no cause, but arising from both is not established because it contradicts substance. Therefore, by implication, arising from neither is also prevented. Arising from no cause is too extreme, because it would become that a lotus arises from the sky. If it arises from existence, then arising from self is not established, because the produced and the producer contradict in substance. If other arises from other, then darkness would also arise from a flame, because it is other. If it is said that it arises from self and other, then arising from a permanent cause is impossible, because the cause does not change, so the effect
