Where? In ultimate truth, there is no object of focus. Whatever is emptiness is conventional truth, and whatever is conventional truth is emptiness. Thus it is. Similarly, the oneness of the two truths is also refuted by that very fact, and difference is also refuted. As it is said in the Sutra Unraveling the Thought: 'The element of formations and the nature of ultimate reality are of a nature that is free from one and different. Whoever conceives of them as one and different, those ones have entered into a wrong view.' Thus it is. Therefore, the lower Svatantrika school, by considering illusion as ultimate reality, establishes the oneness of the two truths; and by considering appearance and emptiness as different, establishes difference in essence. This is not a good understanding of the intention of the Able One. Why? Because it falls into the extreme of existence and non-existence. As it is said in the King of Samadhi Sutra: 'Constancy and annihilation are also extremes. Existence and non-existence, both of these are extremes. Knowing that both of these are absent, the wise do not even abide in the middle.' Thus it is. The higher Svatantrika school, such as the scholar Yeshe Nyingpo, Shantarakshita, and Kamalashila, understood the intention of the Able One in this way: In reality, it transcends extremes, and in conventionality, it is established as it abides in the form of dependent origination and illusion. Moreover, in conventionality, it is established by the three modes of valid cognition: establishing one's own position, refuting the position of others, and projecting one's own system. For example, if one asserts that things are permanent, then the subject, things, should be impermanent, because they are produced, like a pot. After refuting in this way, the self-established proposition of the Svatantrika is: the subject, things, is impermanent, because it is produced, because it arises from causes and conditions. According to this system, the two truths are: these appearances are conventional truths, appearing in various ways merely as dependent origination, and it is asserted that they arise from others. From this point on, all Buddhists agree that things arise from others. Conventional truth is also divided into: valid conventional truth, which appears and can perform a function, and false conventional truth, which appears but cannot perform a function. As it is said in the Two Truths: 'Although appearances are similar, the distinction between valid and non-valid conventional truth is made based on whether they can or cannot perform a function.' Thus it is. Moreover, all conventional phenomena are mistaken, so they do not revert until the pure ground is attained; the noble ones
