Birth and cessation are not established, because it is impossible for things to exist in name without depending on birth and cessation, and it is impossible to become other things. All of these are simultaneously negated, and suffering and so on are gradually perceived in name, and because momentariness and change are prevented. Now, to speak of the common nature: the Hearer's path is whatever abides in discipline, hears and thinks. The virtues of a śrāmaṇa, such as the path and liberation, are all good. "Because of common agreement, truth should be refuted." The Treasury says: "By abiding in discipline, possessing hearing and thought, one should diligently practice meditation." In this way, one first enters the gate that is shown, and abides in discipline. Even if scolded, one does not scold back. Even if angered, one does not become angry again. Even if struck, one does not strike back. Even if one's faults are exposed, one does not expose the faults of others. These are the four qualities of a śrāmaṇa. And abiding in the twelve qualities of asceticism, such as begging for alms. And in order to know the objects to be accepted and rejected, such as the aggregates, elements, sources, dependent arising, the path and what is not the path, one should engage in hearing and thinking. And in gatherings and unions, one attains liberation by meditating on the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. And knowing the measure of food. And striving in yoga by not sleeping at night and dawn. And meditating on the impure, which is the antidote to desire and so on. And meditating on breathing in and out. And the robes that are the signs of ordination. And carrying a begging bowl and a staff, and having few desires. And being content and so on. And the four truths. And meditating on dependent arising and so on. Since one acknowledges that the vehicles are in agreement, it is not a negation, but rather something that one should actually strive for. However, if there is a clinging to the truth of purification and liberation in these, then it is not merely negating the object that obstructs wisdom. Śāntideva said: "Here, it is not negating the nature of appearance, but rather, whatever is the cause of suffering, one should reverse the false notion of truth." Thus it is said. The twelve qualities of asceticism are: From the Compendium of Sutras: "Wearing rags from dust and dirt, dwelling in cemeteries, sitting upright, not accepting later gifts, wearing felt, wearing three robes, dwelling under trees, eating one meal, abiding as is, dwelling in cemeteries without shelter, dwelling in solitude, and begging for alms. The capable one, possessing a peaceful mind, has spoken of these twelve ascetic practices."
