I prostrate to the excellent ones among those who speak of the complete Buddhas, who teach the peace of ceasing all extremes. Thus, it enters into understanding the emptiness of appearances, which is without coming or going, and without inherent existence from the beginning. There are three negations of conduct: not being established by nature, not being the conduct of the holy, and being a place of reproach. First, conduct is not established, just as the object of action, the agent of action, and the combination of permanence and impermanence are negated. Second, even in the world, one who benefits and brings happiness to others more than oneself is considered holy, while one who only benefits oneself is reproached. Third, it is reasonable to reproach those who abandon sentient beings who have benefited them for a long time, as it is like forgetting kindness. Therefore, it is necessary to bring benefit and happiness. In the Letter it says: "Those who have drunk the essence of milk with the force of loving-kindness, and who rely on those who have endured much hardship, if they are abandoned, what could be more base than that?" Similarly, Shantideva says: "Those who have been fathers and mothers, and who have become relatives and friends, who have previously benefited me, those sentient beings, one should repay their kindness." Thus it is. There are three negations of the result: not being established by nature, not reaching the ultimate benefit for oneself, and being inferior because there is no benefit for others. First, it is like negating Nirvana. Second, because one has not obtained the ten powers, one must first accomplish great liberation. "Although you are liberated from the sufferings of samsara, you are still not completely extinguished. Seek this supreme Buddha vehicle." Thus it is. Third, immediately after Nirvana, one cannot accomplish the benefit of anyone, so it is only an image of liberation. In the Jataka tales it says: "Even my great suffering reveals the steadfast nature of compassion, but those who tremble at the small suffering of others should be reproached." Thus it is. Having explained the principles of the Lesser Vehicle, including the method of refuting the Pratyekabuddha path, now there are two ways to extensively divide the teachings of the Great Vehicle: the distinctions and the excellent explanation of the teachings that possess distinctions. First, the distinctions of the Great Vehicle that are superior to the Lesser Vehicle are like the great snowy mountains and oceans. The Great Vehicle of the Buddhas is superior because of the seven, such as the excellent armor. The vehicle is like the sky, an immeasurable and vast mansion. In that Great Vehicle

are the means and conduct, and the principles of Dharma have become a great snow mountain (Mount Kailash) lake from the ocean. The Lesser Vehicle is regarded as the nature of water in an ox's hoofprint, because it possesses and does not possess the seven great qualities. Among them, the great object is that it can focus on the Dharma nature like the sky, but the Lesser Vehicle cannot. The great practice is that during the time of the path and conduct, it accomplishes the great benefit of both oneself and others. The Hearers and Solitary Realizers only have self-interest. The great wisdom is that there is wisdom that combines the Dharma nature empty of the two selves with compassion, which the inferior vehicle does not have. The great diligence is that there is no joy in benefiting sentient beings for countless eons for the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. The great skillful means is that it does not abide by the extremes of samsara and nirvana, and thus accomplishes benefit, which the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not have. The great accomplishment is that from the time of Buddhahood, it possesses infinite qualities such as benefiting others and power, which the inferior vehicle does not have. The great activity is that as long as samsara exists, it spontaneously accomplishes benefiting others, which the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not have, but the Great Vehicle does, so it is superior. The Ornament of the Sutras says: "The great object, and likewise the two practices, the arising of wisdom and diligence, and whatever skillful means there are, the truly great accomplishment, and the great activity of the Buddha, because it possesses the seven great qualities, it is definitely called the Great Vehicle." Thus it is. Among these, the means of great compassion is particularly superior. The Precious Garland says: "From the Hearer Vehicle, the aspiration and conduct of the Bodhisattva and the dedication are not explained, how can it become the Great Vehicle?" Thus it is. In short, with the vast means, wisdom, and liberation like the sky, both self-interest and the interest of others can be accomplished during the time of the path, and happiness and joy arise, and they also arise from Buddhahood. As the Collection says: "This vehicle is like the sky, an immeasurable great palace, it is the supreme vehicle that manifests joy, happiness, and bliss. Having mounted it, it dispels the suffering of all sentient beings. Because of this reason, it is called the Great Vehicle." Thus it is. Explaining the particularly superior Great Vehicle, although the nature of the Supreme Vehicle is not different, from the three views that guide the chariot, it is known as Mind-Only, Autonomy, and Consequence.
