The five afflictions. They arise from the two and the ten, and the remaining seven are also suffering. Thus it is said. How long does it take to complete? If measured by speed, it is completed in three lifetimes. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: The wheel of existence has no beginning. It is the nature of dependent arising. The twelve branches have three parts. There are two branches at the beginning and the end, and eight in the middle are fully complete. Thus it is said. The method of meditation is: by looking at the bones in the charnel ground, thinking that this is caused by death, and death comes from aging, from aging to ignorance, understanding the twelve links of dependent origination in forward order. When ignorance ceases, aging and death cease, meditating with the principle of reversal. The practice is: the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, between the accumulation path, come from relying on a spiritual friend, listening and contemplating. The Pratyekabuddha is due to the weakness of the power of the lineage, (1) abandoning the hustle and bustle with joy, and achieving one's own Bodhi through meditation. The fruit of accomplishment is like a parrot. If one practices in a group, then one is dull-witted and has little merit, practicing with many people, and perhaps one can attain the fruit in three lifetimes. The fastest is at the end of the three realms. Thus it is said. Here, too, the two types of large and small practices in a group are explained. Like a rhinoceros, one who is sharp-witted and has great merit, living alone, it takes a hundred kalpas to achieve the fruit. Thus it is said: The rhinoceros needs a hundred kalpas of causes. Therefore, accumulating merit on the basis of the accumulation path, realizing the five paths on one seat, therefore it is considered sharp-witted. The former cannot do it, therefore it is dull. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: The Bodhi of the Shravakas and the rhinoceros, all on the edge of one meditation. Thus it is said. Among them, the Shravaka Arhats and the Pratyekabuddhas with dull faculties, with their supernormal powers, can see up to two thousand of the three thousand worlds. Like a rhinoceros, one can see three thousand worlds, and the Buddha can see countless worlds. As stated in the same text: Arhats, rhinoceroses, Shravakas, etc., can see two thousand, three thousand, and countless. Thus it is said. There are two situations for Pratyekabuddhas: increasing and decreasing. That is, during the period when the Buddha has passed away and the Shravakas have also disappeared, because one's past aspirations have matured, realization naturally arises in the continuum, and thus the fruit is obtained. As stated in the Root Wisdom: When the perfect Buddhas have not appeared, and the Shravaka disciples have also disappeared, the wisdom of the Pratyekabuddha

It arises naturally without dependence. So it is said. The detailed circumstances of these should be understood in my treatise, the Great Chariot of Definitive Meaning. There are three refutations of it: refuting the place, the conduct, and the fruit. There are three refutations of the place: refuting the lineage, the mind, and the dependent origination. First, the certainty of lineage is not established, because it is established in dependence on sharpness, dullness, and mediocrity, so self-nature is not established, and because the self-natured obscurations are prevented, and because it has already been established that one must attain the Hearer, Solitary Realizer, and Buddha. Refuting the grasping mind, grasping without a grasped object is not reasonable, just as the horns of a rabbit are not established, so its grasping is not established. A moment is also not reasonable, as it was previously prevented. Because the dharmas of dependent origination are not established as mutually contacting, dependence is not reasonable and cannot be related. The Vaibhashikas also do not have action and existence, just as connection and entry are prevented. Name and form do not exist because contact with the womb is prevented. The six sense bases do not exist because the ability to generate consciousness is prevented. Contact and feeling are also the same as before. Desire and grasping do not exist because the general meaning of falsity and dependence is prevented. Birth and old age and death also do not exist, just like the reasoning of one and many and permanent and impermanent. In the Treasury it is said: From ignorance to old age and death, the twelve limbs in the end, the activity of dependent origination, I consider like a dream illusion. And in the Mother Sutra it is said: All dependent origination is naturally completely pure. Meditating on these in terms of entering and returning is also not an antidote, just as knowing that eating food makes one full and not eating makes one hungry, but not eating does not make one full, so in principle, even if one meditates without realizing emptiness, dependent origination will not cease. We, as an antidote to being ignorant of karma and its results, rely on virtuous and non-virtuous actions, knowing that desired and undesired results arise, and thus engage in abandoning and taking, but we only consider dependent origination to appear but without self-nature. The Root Wisdom says: Whoever arises by dependent origination, does not cease, does not arise, is not permanent, is not discontinuous, does not come, does not go, is neither different nor one, is peaceful.
