Because that is not established. Secondly, it is unreasonable to say that a jewel is like the sun but not like darkness, because the similarity is only in the object, and upon analysis, the similarity is not established. Thirdly, when it is said that blue bark and blue lotus are similar, only the general blue is negated, so the two similar qualities are not established. Because the two individual similar qualities are not established, the general blue will also not be established, because the coarse and fine are connected and not established. The refutation of the four characteristics is divided into two: it is not possible to become one, and it is not possible to become permanent or impermanent separately. The first is that it is unreasonable for birth to be from non-existence to existence, aging to be a change from new to old, abiding to be from birth to non-destruction, and destruction to be a change from existence to non-existence, because the atom is not established, so different actions are unreasonable, and because there are birth, aging, and abiding, it contradicts destruction and action, and these three also transform into destruction, so the forms are the same. Only in appearance is difference not established, and in reality, parts are not established. The Root Wisdom Treatise says: Birth and the other three, as the characteristics and actions of conditioned phenomena, cannot be gathered in one thing at one time, how is that possible? So it is said. It is not possible for these four to enter into one momentary thing, and since there is nothing different from the moment in things, if these four do not enter, then the commitment that all conditioned phenomena enter these four is broken. Therefore, no matter what thing, it seems to be like that in appearance, but in reality, it is a mistake, and even the momentary parts of birth, aging, abiding, and destruction are not established in the nature of things, because it says there: When a thing is in the process of destruction, birth is unreasonable. If it is not in the process of destruction, then it is not a thing. All things at all times are subject to the law of aging and death, if there is something that does not age and die, what kind of existence is it? So it is said. When analyzing the appearing things with this reasoning, one will directly recognize in an instant the nature that is free from birth, aging, abiding, and destruction, like the sky, and the meditation of abiding in the nature will arise naturally, thus destroying samsara. The Four Hundred Verses says: Small wisdom will not have even a slight doubt about this Dharma, even if a slight doubt arises,

It will turn into a tattered mat. That is to say, if one realizes it, then there is no need to mention it. In the Mother Sutra, it says: When explaining this category of dharmas that are unborn, un abiding, and unceasing, five hundred monks, without receiving, had their minds completely liberated from the outflows. The nun Nikri found the Dharma eye, which is without dust and free from defilements, in all dharmas. However, this is not to say that one should merely think that there is no arising like a clump of grass and then leave it in a state of non-conceptualization, but rather to clearly recognize its nature as such, and then rest in a state of effortless expanse. Because the nature is such, children do not realize it because they cling to characteristics. In the Konchok Tala Sutra (Ratnakuta Sutra, Chapter of Talaratna), it says: The Tathagata is always the unborn Dharma, all Dharmas are the same as the Sugata. Those with childish minds who cling to characteristics, practice Dharmas that do not exist in the world. Thus it is said. Separately, it cannot be permanent or impermanent. If arising and so on are each permanent, then they themselves are not conditioned, nor can they be the characteristics of other conditioned things. If they are impermanent, then each one must have four things, such as arising, and so on, so it would become endless. In the Root Wisdom (Mulamadhyamakakarika), it says: For arising, abiding, and ceasing, if there is another characteristic of conditioned things, if it exists, it will become endless, if it does not exist, then they are not conditioned. Thus it is said. Letters are also not established, because from the aspects of limbs, dust, and moments, it is not established as either the same or different. In the Mother Sutra, it says: All dharmas are without letters, without names, and are separated from all characteristics. Then, from where are so many aggregates of Dharma spoken? Although there are no letters in reality, because those who are deluded without realizing it cling to letters and practice in samsara, for their sake, names are imputed, and the meaning of unborn and so on are heard and taught. In the Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: For dharmas without letters, who is the listener and who is the speaker? Imputing names to the unchanging, hearing and teaching is also done. Entering is also non-existent, just as ordinary people enter a path, because there is no agent or object; just as livestock enter a house, because difference is prevented; and it is unreasonable to enter permanence or impermanence, if it is permanent, then it cannot enter, if it is impermanent, then it will cease when entering is made. Therefore, both arising and entering are negated.
