That which is done by the great is not said to be done by consciousness. Thus, there are three that are not consciousness: vows, non-vows, and others. The basis of mind is merely knowing the meaning, that is, the six, such as eye consciousness. As the Sutra School says, it does not grasp hidden objects, because things like pots are actually seen. Those who grasp objects, the three, eye, ear, and mind, grasp things like pots that are far away. The three, nose, tongue, and body, grasp the number of particles of the object and the particles of the senses equally when they come into contact with the object. As it says in that very text: Eye and mind and ear, the three that do not touch the object, the other three, nose, etc., are said to grasp the object equally. Thus it is. The basis of mental factors is grasping the distinctions of meaning. If divided, there are fifty-one: contact, attention, feeling, perception, and thought. The five omnipresent ones: desire, conviction, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom, the five that ascertain their respective objects: faith, shame, conscientiousness, non-attachment, non-hatred, non-ignorance, diligence, pliancy, conscientiousness, equanimity, and non-harmfulness, the eleven virtuous ones: desire, anger, pride, ignorance, views, doubt, the six root afflictions: anger, resentment, concealment, vexation, jealousy, stinginess, deceit, cunning, arrogance, harm, shamelessness, recklessness, lethargy, excitement, lack of faith, laziness, carelessness, forgetfulness, distraction, and non-intelligence, the twenty secondary afflictions, and sleep, regret, investigation, and analysis, the four variable factors, totaling fifty-one. Feeling and thought and perception, desire and contact and intelligence and mindfulness, attention and conviction, concentration are in all minds. Faith and conscientiousness, extreme gentleness, equanimity, knowing shame, having conscience, the two roots, non-harmfulness and diligence, always arise in virtue. Thus and so on. All of these are not substances other than the mind.

And believe. The five that follow the mind, namely place, object, aspect, time, and identical substance, are: touch and eye consciousness arise from one sense organ, and like a pot, one object is focused on at one time, and both grasp it as blue, and the substances are equal to each other. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: Mind, intellect, and consciousness are, the same meaning, mind and mental factors are, the basis and object, along with aspects, existing equally are also five aspects. Feeling is experience, consciousness is, the nature of grasping at characteristics. The aggregate of formations is other than the other four aggregates. And so on. Non-associated formations are twenty-three, namely: attainment, the samadhi of non-perception, the samadhi of cessation, non-perception, the life faculty, homogeneity, birth, aging, abiding, impermanence, collection of names, collection of words, collection of letters, individual being, entering, individual determination, aggregation, quickness, habituation, time, place, number, and assembly. All of these are different in substance from the three: form, mind, and mental factors. Like the palm of the hand and the fist, they are different in substance due to the difference in location. The basis of the unconditioned is: that which is not born from causes and conditions, namely space, and the cessation of individual analysis, and the cessation of non-individual analysis, these three. As it says in the same text: The unconditioned also has three aspects, space and the two cessations. And so on. All three of these are established as permanent and real substances. The other meaning of destruction is the four characteristics that represent conditioned phenomena, exemplified by a pot: birth, aging, abiding, and impermanence. These four represent conditioned phenomena, and are the four characteristics that follow them: the birth of birth, the aging of aging, the abiding of abiding, the destruction of destruction. Thus, the four characteristics and the four corresponding characteristics, and the eight substances of the pot, these sixteen are like sixteen pillars lined up side by side, different in substance, existing as substances at the same time. Among them, when a pot is born, the fundamental birth and the birth of birth lead from the future place to the present place. Therefore, the birth of the eight phenomena such as the pot is due to the power of that other birth.
