And it should be known that the liberation of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas is not the same as the wisdom and liberation of (the Buddha). Those noble Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas enter the Mahāyāna from the small accumulation path, because the Mahāyāna Buddha must accomplish the five paths of the Mahāyāna and the relationship of going and returning that follows. Noble ones also do not become ordinary beings, because they have already attained the Arhat state. Nor do they become Mahāyāna noble ones, because they have not attained the same level of abandonment and realization and power as the path of seeing. Because they are noble Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas who practice the Mahāyāna accumulation and application paths, the two aspects of the sign do not prove that they are Mahāyāna noble ones, because it is not pervasive. If it were, then when the bodhisattva of the first ground manifests as a Buddha, he should already be a Buddha, which is the same as "being a noble one and appearing as a Buddha." For a detailed classification of these, please refer to my treatise "The Jewel Staircase." Refuting the non-existence of the Ālayavijñāna: The six alternate like the five colors alternate, but in name, the Ālayavijñāna cannot be non-existent, because it is impossible to enter saṃsāra, impossible to be liberated from saṃsāra, and impossible to arise after annihilation. First, if there is no Ālayavijñāna that constantly enters saṃsāra, then it is impossible to take rebirth in saṃsāra, because there is no basis for habits; and during fainting, the six consciousnesses such as eye consciousness do not exist. It is impossible to be liberated from saṃsāra because, on the entity of one consciousness, afflictions and what is to be abandoned and the agent of abandonment cannot coexist, because the five sense consciousnesses cease when the noble one enters into samādhi on the path. It is impossible to arise after annihilation because, after fainting and so on, the six consciousnesses arise, so the six consciousnesses do not arise from the previous six consciousnesses, because they have ceased for a long time. The body also does not arise, because it is the proximate cause. As the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: "Consciousness arises from mind, mind arises from Ālayavijñāna, all minds arise from Ālayavijñāna, like waves." And as the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra says: "The taking consciousness is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river, it is not permissible to grasp as self, this I have not shown to children."

In the Hearer Vehicle, too, as in the teaching that emanates from one, the Sutra on the Four Benefits of the Tathagata states: "Beings delight in the ālaya, universally delight in the ālaya, and truly arise from the ālaya. To those who manifestly delight in the ālaya, if the Dharma is taught for the sake of abandoning the ālaya, they will desire to listen." It is just like that. There are three points to refuting the absence of the Great Vehicle: the absence of proof, the presence of harm, and similar reasoning. The first point is that conditioned things are not contradictory to impermanence, because the Enjoyment Body is not conditioned. As stated in the Uttaratantra: "Uncreated and spontaneously accomplished." Some people think that things are impermanent or a momentary continuum, but they think that permanence is constant, so they think that it is a conditioned thing born from merit. This is simply because they have not turned their minds to the Great Vehicle. Moreover, for qualities that are essentially the same as the essence of the heart, there is no before or after. By removing the stains of obscuration with the two accumulations, the two bodies are manifested. Although it is assumed to be produced by a cause, it will eventually be separated. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Although there is no difference between before and after, that suchness is purified." And so on, the scriptures have clearly explained. Even so, if you think that it will become truly permanent, that is not right, because the Tathagata's wisdom, which is liberated from all things and non-things, is the realm of pure vision and is inconceivable. As stated in the Uttaratantra: "The Buddha-nature and the Buddha's enlightenment, the Buddha's qualities and the Buddha's activities, are also not to be thought of by pure sentient beings." It is not contradictory to selflessness, because the Sugata-essence emptiness is devoid of temporary dharmas, and the ālaya is a momentary continuum. It is not contradictory to suffering, because you also think that the lessening of suffering is happiness. It is not contradictory to peace, because the Arhat is not ultimate Nirvana, but has pacified the gross suffering of samsara. And we think that the Buddha is the Dharmakaya, and you also do not think that cessation is Nirvana. It is also not contradictory to the Vinaya, because for the sake of great necessity, it is permissible to abandon small things that should be abandoned, and Bodhisattvas do not practice things that should be abandoned that are defiled by afflictions and ignorance. It is also not contradictory to karma and its results, because the Great Vehicle also does not think that karma will exhaust itself.
