It is said to be dull. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Those two repeatedly, their own minds are always endowed with arising, for the sake of manifest joy in nirvana, conception is considered to be dull." So it is said. Those two refer to the Arhats of Hearers and Solitary Realizers generating the mind of enlightenment. So, do the Arhats of Hearers realize emptiness or not? Some early teachers think that they do not realize the selflessness of persons, and that the Solitary Buddhas realize that half of the objects of dharma are without inherent existence, so neither of them realize it. Although some argue that they realize it, I think that it should be understood in this way: In the past, when the Hearer's schools separated, some thought there was a self, some thought there was no self, and some thought it was like an image. Because there were different ways of practicing the path, in the time of the result, they also followed the previous path, so there were two kinds of realization and non-realization. Moreover, the Arhats who have entered the path of the Vaibhashikas are more accustomed to clinging to things that existed before, so they only say that they realize the selflessness of persons, but they do not realize the selflessness of dharmas, because they cling to characteristics. If the path is practiced from the side of the Sutras, because of the depth of wisdom, it is thought that they realize it like an image. I think that those with sharp faculties realize that everything is the same by inferring from the nature of form, while those with dull faculties do not know anything other than what is indicated. Since they are consistent in realizing only the selflessness of inherent existence, both must realize that the clinging to the aggregates is empty. As it says in the Precious Garland: "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, then there is clinging to self in it. If there is clinging to self, then there is also karma, and from that karma there will also be birth." And, if one realizes that one thing is selfless, then one must realize that everything is selfless. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: "What is the emptiness of one, that is the emptiness of all. How one looks at one thing, that is said to be looking at all." So it is said. Moreover, knowing that one enters samsara because of the fault of clinging to self, although the two, sharp and dull, are the same in that all dharmas are selfless, the dull ones do not realize the emptiness of the nature of dharmas, which is the object of all groundlessness, so they say that they do not realize the selflessness of dharmas with a negative tone of rejecting inferiority. And the sharp ones only know the nature of dharmas as mere dependent origination.

Although they exist, they are inclined towards peace because they fear even the happiness and suffering of dreams. To merely refute the inferior, some scriptures state that they have not realized the selflessness of phenomena. The *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra* states: Those Arhats, seeing that all phenomena arise from causes and conditions, think to pass into nirvāṇa, but because they have not realized the selflessness of phenomena, they do not pass into nirvāṇa. And the *Vimalakīrti Sūtra* states: It is better to have afflictions with attachment to emptiness; the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas who are without afflictions with fixation are not like that. How do they realize the unconditioned, and what is the fixation? He replied: Their unconditioned is extremely small, like taking a drop of water from the ocean with the tip of a hair. And the *Brahma-viśeṣa-cinta-paripṛcchā Sūtra* states: Śāriputra said: The Śrāvakas follow the sound, and with the wisdom that is liberated by the insignificant wisdom of their own continuum, they call me the best of the wise. And the *Udayana-paripṛcchā Sūtra* states: The emptiness that they realize is as small as the space inside a mustard seed eaten by a worm. And in the commentary on the *Uttaratantra*: Like the sun in the sky of clouds, here only a portion of the wise, even the noble ones with pure eyes of wisdom, do not fully see everything. These are the statements. It is not that they have not realized the emptiness of these things as selfless, but even realizing the gross particles and so on is also selfless, because the mind that grasps at the gross has disappeared. However, they are daunted by the Buddha's teachings, which are as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and the bodhisattva's conduct, which is a vast means, and they are weary of the faults of saṃsāra. The *Prajñāpāramitā* also states: Those who wish to attain nirvāṇa in the Śrāvaka ground should also train in the Prajñāpāramitā. And, when this chapter on the unequal and the equal was taught, five hundred monks and two hundred nuns, without taking anything, had their minds completely liberated from the defilements. And so on, how should the meaning of these words be guided? Therefore, the wisdom that realizes illusion as selfless is the same only in the point of selflessness. However, the means of remaining in this illusion for a long time and performing the vast benefit of sentient beings.
