These are the eighty-four aspects of hearing that Bodhisattvas have heard, as it is said. Although some Sutras say there are eighty, we follow the new translation which says there are eighty-four. Thus, when listening to the Dharma, it is shown that the six perfections arise in the disciple's mindstream: offering flowers and cushions is generosity; well guarding the three doors is the perfection of discipline; harm is patience, joy is diligence; non-distraction, hearing and holding is meditation; cutting off doubt and superimposition is supreme wisdom. When listening to the Dharma, arranging the Dharma seat of the Lama,

Adorning with offerings such as flowers is generosity. Restraining one's own body, speech, and mind, and abandoning harm to tiny beings such as lice in that direction is morality. Enduring heat and cold, etc., is patience. Praying to the lama and being delighted to listen is diligence. Listening single-pointedly without distraction is meditation. Cutting off doubts and additions to the meaning of what is heard, and ascertaining through faults of debate, etc., is wisdom. Knowing that all of these are without inherent existence, and that the listener, the Dharma, and all lamas are appearances without inherent existence is the perfection of wisdom. These methods are the key instructions for all Dharma practices, as it says in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "Flowers, cushions, etc., are well offered, the conduct of the place is summarized, harm is not done to all beings, prayers are made to the lama, without distraction, listen to the lama's instructions, to eliminate thoughts, ask about faults, Tara is endowed with six limbs." Thus it is said. Tara is spoken of in this way for the sake of the listener meditating on themselves. After the Dharma session, contemplate the kindness of the Dharma and the teacher, and dedicate the merit to enlightenment from the state of illusion. At the end of the Dharma session, contemplate the qualities of the lama and the Dharma, and remember the kindness. That is, the lama who opens the eye of ignorance, leads to the path of liberation, and generates all qualities in the mindstream, thinking that this lama has taught such profound and vast Dharma that is difficult to hear, how great is their kindness. Then, thinking that all of these appearances are without inherent existence, like an illusion, may the source of benefit and happiness, the teachings, increase. May we practice the Dharma in all lifetimes. May auspiciousness and prosperity increase in all lands. May all beings attain Buddhahood instantly. Thus dedicate the merit. Abiding in the stainless glory of listening, its benefits are immeasurable. Even beings who merely hear the sound of the Dharma drum being struck are liberated from the lower realms, what need is there to mention those who listen? This is also as it says in the sutra, in the Ghaṇḍī Sutra: "To indicate the time for expounding the sacred Dharma, the sound of striking the drum or ghaṇḍī, hearing it, one will attain enlightenment, what need is there to mention those who come to listen?" Thus it is said. Furthermore, there are countless benefits.
