Just as nothing can be obtained, one does not listen to the Dharma, or even if one listens, one's mind is distracted by sleepiness, playfulness, and other things. Just as a container with a hole in the bottom, when placed on the ground, will leak even if it is filled with all the rainwater, so too, when one hears the Dharma once, one remembers it at that time, but because one does not repeatedly familiarize oneself with the memory, one forgets it. Just as a container filled with poison, even if it is filled with rainwater, is not poured out, and whoever uses it will not be comfortable, so too, when one is controlled by afflictions, hearing the Dharma again only makes one more bloated. Therefore, it is advised to abandon these three situations. In the 'Intermediate Mother Sutra,' it is said, 'Listen well, thoroughly, keep it in your heart, grasp it, and I will tell it to you.' Therefore, it is advised to listen well without afflictions, to listen thoroughly without turning one's face away, and to grasp it without letting the bottom have a hole. The six stains are as stated in the 'Discrimination of Wisdom': 'Pride and disbelief, not seeking meaning, outward distraction, inward contraction, and decline due to weariness are stains.' It is like this. The thirty-six faults are: 'Disrespect and other six works of Mara, pride and other six works of obscuration, pretense and other six works of abandoning the Dharma, pursuit of wealth and other six faults of distraction, attachment to gain and honor and other six faults of wrong view, alteration and other six paths of straying.' 'Abandon the thirty-six faults and listen.' Among them, the six works of Mara are as stated in the 'Adornment of Qualities Sutra': 'Laziness, idleness, disbelief in the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma, not serving virtuous friends, not paying attention according to the teachings, and despising the results of actions due to attachment to this world.' The six works of obscuration are as stated in the 'Sutra Requested by Ocean of Wisdom': 'Mara has entered one's own continuum, therefore one's pride is great, one abandons the Dharma due to karmic obscurations, one listens to the near teachings due to revealing distant secrets, one does not listen to the Bodhisattva Pitaka, one has wrong views towards virtuous friends, and one has wrong views towards the Dharma.' The six causes of abandoning the Dharma are: It is said in the same sutra: 'Due to desiring sins, one's body and mind are pretentious, due to pride one is disrespectful to the speaker of the Dharma, due to doubt one is disrespectful to the Dharma, due to pretense'

Living in unclean places, disrespecting parents, Khenpos, and teachers, being rough in body and mind, and constantly arguing in disharmony. The six faults of being distracted from the Dharma are: From the same text: having many worldly affairs, much material gain, much idle talk, many friendships with evil companions, many wrong thoughts, and many diseases and demonic influences due to the power of bad karma. The six faults of perversion are: From the "Sutra Requested by King Yul Khor": not repaying kindness and being deceitful, practicing Dharma out of attachment to gain and honor, being jealous and stingy of others' gains, not thinking of the qualities of the Dharma speaker but seeking faults, believing in and relying on evil teachers, seeking debate and not seeking the merits of virtue. The six Dharmas that deviate from the Mahayana are: From the "Manjushri Emanation Sutra": not seeking the Bodhisattva Pitaka but seeking the magic of non-Buddhists, engaging in worldly gossip and not seeking much learning, seeking the hearing of words and not seeking liberation through it, seeking the Hearer-Self Realizer Pitaka and not seeking the Bodhisattva Pitaka, not manifesting skillful means but seeking the cessation of afflictions, desiring to be skilled in the fields of knowledge but not seeking virtuous friends. Such faults should be abandoned and listened to. With what kind of qualities should one listen? Entering into listening to the Dharma, when one should listen in a good way, cherishing like the thought of jewels, etc., six kinds, enduring afflictions, etc., six kinds of difficult practices, much learning and diligence, etc., six kinds that do not change due to circumstances, generating compassion, etc., six kinds of special actions, knowing the differences, etc., six kinds of needs, seeking the Dharma, etc., six kinds of seeking, listening with thirty-six qualities. First, the six cherished intentions are explained, from the "Sutra Requested by Good Arm": regarding the Dharma-speaking lama as a treasure of jewels, regarding the Dharma as a wish-fulfilling jewel, regarding listening to the Dharma as extremely rare, regarding the Dharma
