There is the fault of being mistaken. There is the fault of abandoning the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, deceiving faithful believers with the view of emptiness and causing them to fall into lower realms, saying there is nothing to do and remaining in the state of ordinary people, proclaiming secrets to the immature, since there are many faults, therefore the vehicles are taught in stages. By clinging to the extreme of emptiness, one denigrates cause and effect, and there is the fault of falling into lower realms as a result. As it is said in the Ratnakuta Sutra: 'Subhuti, the view of self is as great as Mount Meru, but the view of emptiness by those with pride is not so, because it cannot be cured.' Since everything is primordially of the nature of space (Tibetan: ནམ་མཁའ་,Sanskrit Devanagari: आकाश,Sanskrit Romanization: ākāśa,Literal meaning: space), there is nothing to do. Saying that doing will destroy, clinging to the idleness of the three doors, there is the fault of remaining as ordinary people. As it says in the same text: 'In the future, monks with pride, foolish as sheep, will say that the Blessed One said that all dharmas are like space, therefore do not strive for any dharma, thus making the alms of the countryside fruitless. These people will not even attain the bliss of heaven, let alone unsurpassed enlightenment.' Proclaiming secrets to the immature will cause the obscuration of abandoning the Dharma. As it says in the Intermediate Mother Sutra: 'Subhuti, one should not speak of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness to those who are beginners and newly entered into the vehicle.' Why is that? Because they will be startled, frightened, and have wrong views, and thus abandon the Dharma.' And as it says in the Fourteenth Root Downfall: 'Proclaiming secrets to beings who are not fully matured is the seventh.' Therefore, if one does not enter the vehicle in stages, there will be many faults, and one must enter only in stages. As it says in the Essence of Earth Sutra: 'Children are young in faculties and lazy, they do not diligently practice the two vehicles, they will not possess the wheel of the Great Vehicle. They are not vessels for the vast Great Vehicle. Children alone seek liberation, their intelligence and conduct are weak and they have no compassion, they cling to nihilism and are attached to evil destinies, they abandon the true Dharma and teach what is not Dharma, they slander the two vehicles and abandon their vows.' Having taken the vows of a monk and claiming to be a Mahayana practitioner, I will destroy the Dharma, for all beings.
