Now, what is needed is to have no trust, not to speak of ease, not to be respectful, to abide in the non-speaking deity, and not to rejoice in the words spoken by him, for if you do, the vows will be broken, because you are seized by sinful friends. When abandoning, it is not out of hatred, but with the thought, 'This has become a sinful friend and companion, how pitiful. May this not seize me and others.' 'Whenever I have the ability, until then, may I alone lead this one from the evil path, and may I establish him on the good path.' Thinking thus, one must thoroughly abandon with the intention of abandoning association and familiarity. As it is said in the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra, 'Sinful friends should be completely abandoned, that is, those who have broken their vows, broken their rituals, delight in busyness, are lazy, delight in samsara, turn their backs on enlightenment, and associate with householders. When completely abandoning them, do not generate hatred, anger, or contempt towards them.' 'Otherwise, one should keep the mind of completely abandoning association nearby.' Thus, if one abandons sinful friends, and lamas, acharyas, and khenpos who are associated with sin, then liberation and all virtuous dharmas will be naturally accomplished. One should not rely on or attach one's mind to the side that should be abandoned. Since these certainties are spoken of in many sutras and tantras, those who desire liberation should abandon sinful friends as has been said, and respectfully rely on virtuous spiritual friends. As it is said in the Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish, 'Relying on virtuous spiritual friends increases goodness, and relying on sinful friends increases evil. For example, wind has no smell, but when it comes from a sandalwood grove, it has a fragrant smell, and when it comes from an unclean place, it has a foul smell.' From The Treatise on the Great Vehicle's Essential Instructions, The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury, the extensive commentary on the ninth chapter, Abandoning Sinful Friends.|| Thus, after explaining the place of hearing the sacred Dharma, it is necessary to ascertain how to hear the Dharma. First, a brief explanation: Thus, having abandoned sinful friends,

Who should I rely on? From relying on that, first arises the wisdom of hearing. This is said to be the root of liberation. A person who seeks liberation is called a great person. He first abandons sinful friends and virtuous friends, and when relying on a virtuous and excellent spiritual friend, he asks what the main thing to pursue is. He is told that it is supreme liberation. When asked how to achieve it and its nature, he is taught to make the foundation the discipline, and the first gate should be hearing and thinking. Later, he is told to practice its meaning. Therefore, entering into supreme hearing is said to be the root of liberation. The foundation should be vows and discipline, as Nagarjuna said: Discipline is like the ground for what grows and does not grow, the basis of qualities, as the Buddha said. Thus it is said. Then, hearing, thinking, and meditating should also be done as Vasubandhu said: Abiding in discipline, possessing hearing and thinking, one should diligently engage in meditation. Thus it is said. How to extensively explain the meaning of hearing? First, it is taught that the guru who is to be tamed should examine the vessel in stages, that is: The excellent guru who has heard much and possesses ten qualities, when fully explaining the supreme Dharma to a fortunate disciple, it is crucial to first examine the faculties of the vessel. Among them, one who does not understand the intelligence of those to be tamed, is ignorant of the meaning of what is to be known, is not skilled in the combination of words and phrases, only looks at the gain of material things, conceals the Dharma, desires worldly fame, is weak in the practice of Dharma, is weary of the work of benefiting others, has great pride and jealousy, is stingy with the Dharma, and confuses the Dharma with his own mindstream should be abandoned. One should listen to those who possess the ten qualities of complete excellence. As it says in the Sutra of the Collection of the True Dharma: A speaker who possesses ten qualities is one who has heard much and accumulated hearing, and holds hearing. He does not discriminate between high and low, has no doubt about the Dharma and its meaning, possesses decisive words and complete confidence, and even if he has them, his diligence in seeking hearing does not diminish. He knows the time and measure, as well as medicine and speech and meaning, and does not abandon relying on elderly spiritual friends. Even if he knows the scriptures, the Vinaya, the Sutras, the Abhidharma, and Suchness, he does not give up the practice of asking others.
