Do not mingle with renunciates, abide in few activities and deeds, and do not seek much learning. Do not ripen sentient beings, do not diligently listen to the Dharma, cut off the lineage of the Dharma, do not universally inquire, cut off the lineage of understanding the meaning. Do not diligently seek what is virtuous, but merely dwell alone in a solitary place, thinking that afflictions are small, and merely suppressing arising is enough to be happy, and do not meditate on the path in order to abandon latent tendencies. Not being diligent in one's own and others' benefit, this is the iron hook of the demon dwelling in solitude, a sinful friend disguised as a virtuous friend. Fourth chapter: Lacking view and samadhi, precepts are corrupted, cultivating ordinary awareness, seeking gain, clinging to meaningless solitude and those with empty views, even if associating with those who are mere verbalizers without experience, they follow meaningless words. It becomes like a parrot reciting. Associating with those who lack the understanding of view and practice, the fault of being far from the meaning of Dharma nature arises. Associating with those whose vows and precepts are corrupted, the fault of losing protection due to broken vows arises. Associating with virtuous friends who seek gain, the fault of falling into servitude to food and clothing arises. Associating with those who delight in meaningless seclusion, the fault of falling away from the Buddha's Dharma arises. Associating with those who speak emptily about emptiness, the fault of slandering cause and effect arises. Associating with those who are mere verbalizers without experience, the fault of delighting in meaningless words arises. Associating with speculative verbalizers, the fault of practice becoming lazy arises. Associating with people without bodhicitta and instructions, the fault of not gathering and not benefiting others arises. Associating with those who cling to cause and effect as liberation, the fault of slandering secret mantra arises. Associating with the narrow-minded who cling to characteristics, the fault of being far from the profound Dharma nature arises. There are many instances of Dharma and people unrelated to meaning deceiving one's own mindstream, and measuring the meaning of words not understood with dark matter. Words whose meaning is not understood become like the recitation of a parrot. Therefore, it is precious to associate with good lamas and Dharma friends who can benefit one's own mindstream, and it is only important to abandon sinful friends who are contrary to this. In the Sutra Requested by Ocean of Intelligence, it says: Virtuous

Therefore, one should strive to avoid associating with bad friends. Why? Because in the Intermediate Mother (Madhyamaka Sutra), it says, "Teaching the Dharma with all appearances is a sinful friend." In the Angulimala Sutra, it says, "Beings in the time of strife, with inferior views, pretending to be ascetics, slandering the Great Vehicle, are pretenders, sinful beggars, inauspicious beings, blessed by demons, disturbed by heretics, and holding wrong views." In the Arya Bhadrakara Pariprccha Sutra, it says, "Sons of good family, those who do not wish to know that all dharmas appear like illusions and are without inherent existence, but only strive for virtuous roots with objects, are not ascetics, but are deceitful." In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it says, "A bhikshu who has a mind of duality is blessed by demons. One who does not believe in the Great Vehicle is deceived by demons." Thus, it is advised to avoid them. Associating with them cuts off the path to liberation, diminishes virtue, and the state of good rebirth is not achieved, let alone the attainment of peaceful enlightenment. Therefore, one should avoid sinful friends." Associating with sinful friends or bad gurus diminishes virtue and increases non-virtue. Not only does it fail to achieve the temporary happiness of gods and humans, but it also cuts off the path to liberation. Ultimately, the attainment of peaceful enlightenment is out of the question. In the Dhammapada, it says, "One who lacks faith and is stingy, speaks falsely and is divisive, the wise should not associate with them, do not befriend sinful people. If one associates with those who should not be associated with, one becomes tainted by their faults. Just as an arrow smeared with poison, even if not smeared, will be contaminated." To illustrate the reason why one must avoid seeing harm, an example is given: "Just as a traveler walking on a dangerous road, if afraid of robbers, is only afraid of being robbed, they will take away the wealth and life of this life, but cannot take away eternal happiness." These are given as clear examples. Therefore, it is advised not to rely on an enemy more terrifying than this, and to be cautious and vigilant. This is about the faults of associating with bad friends.
