Therefore, one should rely on the Lama, the virtuous spiritual friend. As it says in the "Liberation of Glorious Birth": "All the qualities of a Bodhisattva arise from the virtuous spiritual friend." Also, as it says in the "Inconceivable Secret Sutra": "Bodhisattvas, relying on the Lama, should perfect all the qualities of Dharma." Also, as it says in the "Ten-Wheel Essence of the Earth Sutra": "By serving and honoring the Lama, one will completely grasp the inconceivable qualities of Dharma. One should also see that all the qualities and miracles of the Buddhas arise from this." Also, as it says in the "Bodhisattva Pitaka Sutra": "In short, if one enters the instructions of the virtuous spiritual friend, one will completely grasp ten inexpressible billions of trillions of qualities." Therefore, one should respectfully rely on such a noble Lama. In the "Collected Intentions Sutra," it also says: "Therefore, Lord of Lanka, the wise, with joy and respect, towards those who have become excellent yogis, should respectfully make aspirations three times, and touch their feet with their heads." Sixth, because the teacher is the most supreme and there is no other (teacher) to rely on, one should also rely on (the Lama). Especially in this degenerate age, other than the loving Lama, there will be no other teacher who will become my teacher, so rely on them with great respect, even more than for the Buddhas. In the pure age when the Buddhas were dwelling, the Buddhas themselves appeared as teachers to benefit beings. Now is a very degenerate age, an age when life, wealth, Dharma, and guides are all in decline. Other than the true Lama, the virtuous spiritual friend, there is no other who can directly teach the Dharma and benefit beings, so rely on them with great respect, even more than for the Buddhas. Moreover, from the perspective of the nature of inherent purity, as well as accomplishing activities and the vastness of activities, the Lama and the Buddha are the same. But because the Lama's kindness to us is greater, it can also be said that the Lama is even more supreme. As it says in the "Guhyasamaja Root Tantra": "Because of the equality of elements, activities, and nature, all Buddhas and the Lama are the same. Because they guide beings to the path of liberation, (the Lama) is superior to the Buddhas." It also says: "The Lama is the same as all Buddhas." "The Lama is superior to all Buddhas." "The glorious Lama, who has become a treasure of supreme qualities, I bow to with my head.

Homage! Thus it is. Furthermore, in the past, when the Buddha subdued beings, he accomplished their welfare by appearing as the actual Buddha. Then, when he accomplished their welfare by appearing as Arhats and Panditas, he emanated as them and compiled the scriptures and composed treatises. Nowadays, he emanates as spiritual friends to uphold the teachings and guide beings to the path of liberation, thus accomplishing their welfare. The Sutra of the Great Nirvana and the Sutra of the Great Drum state: Do not grieve, Ananda! Do not lament, Ananda! In the future, I will emanate as spiritual friends, and become the benefit for you and others. Thus it is. In short, all qualities arise from the Guru, and even establishing the great and excellent path depends on relying on the Guru. The Array of Trees Sutra states: The spiritual friend is born into the lineage of the Buddha, like the eldest son of a Chakravartin king. He is like a mother in nurturing the lineage of qualities. He is like a father in accomplishing vast benefits. He is like a maternal aunt in protecting from sins. He is like a teacher in teaching all the disciplines. He is like a guide in leading to the path of the other shore. He is like a doctor in healing the disease of afflictions. He is like a hero in protecting from fears. He is like a boatman in delivering from the river of Samsara. All the practices of Bodhisattvas depend on the spiritual friend. Our teacher, the Bhagavan Buddha Shakyamuni, also did not appear without relying on a Guru. Therefore, it is reasonable to always rely on the Guru alone. The Gongdü states: Without relying on the teachers, Buddhas will never appear. I have never seen them appear, and if they did, it would contradict the holy scriptures. Thus it is said. The Chakrasamvara Tantra states: Therefore, the root of all Dharmas, is said to be the Guru Vajradhara. Without arising from the Gurus, it is impossible to attain accomplishments. Without arising from the Gurus, the one called Buddha cannot arise. The qualified Guru turns the helm of existence upwards. Thus it is said. Therefore, there are these reasons and countless others. In detail, even if spoken of for eons, they cannot be exhausted. Therefore, from the first karmic person until Buddhahood is attained, one should always be without discouragement.
