Ultimately, one attains perfect Buddhahood. From the Tantra of the Ocean of Wisdom: Whoever engages in the actions of the Guru, That fortunate and wise individual, For six hundred million kalpas, Offering prostrations to all the Buddhas of the three times, Is not as meaningful as this. By accomplishing as the Guru instructs, All desires are fulfilled, And immeasurable merit is obtained. Whoever pleases the Guru With their own possessions and resources, This one is drawn out from the three realms of samsara, To the realm of the Nirmanakaya, And goes to the state of Nirvana. Thus it is said. Fourth, one should also rely on the unsurpassed refuge and protector, From the sufferings of the lower realms and the fears of obstacles, For the sake of protection, there is no other supreme refuge, Even the Buddha himself relied on the Guru, Therefore, to be free from the fears of the lower realms, one should always rely on him. Wandering in samsara for a long time, Because the eye of discernment is dim, one is ignorant of the principles of cause and effect, Therefore, although one desires happiness, one engages in the causes and effects of suffering, As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: Although wishing for happiness, due to ignorance, One destroys one's own happiness like an enemy. Although having the mind to abandon suffering, One runs directly towards suffering. In this way, uncontrollably driven by the force of karma, Tormented by the three lower realms and all the downfalls of existence, Even if one attains the heavenly realms, one is interrupted by obstacles, Threatened by the fears of many undesirable things occurring, Constantly impoverished and experiencing suffering, From that intense and prolonged fear from which no other being can protect, One should also rely on the Guru, the virtuous friend, for protection. In the Net of Illusion it says: Surely protecting from the fears of samsara, Leading to the supreme state of Nirvana, There is no other than the Guru himself. Thus it is said. If one asks, "Are there not Buddhas who possess skillful means and compassion?" The answer is: They also do not arise without a Guru, Therefore, one first relies on the Guru, Therefore, the Guru himself is the refuge and protector of all. In the Gongdü it says: By a thousand kotis of Buddhas, The Guru should be known as most supreme, Why is it that a thousand kotis of Buddhas, Arise relying on the Gurus? Thus, the Guru, the virtuous friend,

The spiritual friend protects from fears and shows all that is good, therefore one should rely on him. As it says in the Ornament of Trees Sutra: "The spiritual friend protects from all the fears of wandering in samsara, and because he shows all that is good, one should always rely on him with the crown of one's head as if he were an ornament, and one should not forget this." Furthermore, that which protects from temporary and ultimate fears and accomplishes all accomplishments in the best way is none other than that. A bodhisattva who is completely embraced by a spiritual friend will not fall into the lower realms. He will not turn back from the Great Vehicle. He will not fall into the level of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer. He will be difficult to overcome by karma and afflictions. He will completely transcend the level of a child. He will not violate the precepts. Because he is protected by him, he will not be deceived by evil friends. Because he is cared for by him, he will not degenerate from the nature of a bodhisattva. Because he is not tainted by worldly dharmas, he is truly superior. Serving him means acting without confusion in all actions. Accomplishing him means not turning back from all endeavors. Approaching him means not being crushed by the actions of demons. Furthermore, if one practices well according to the words of the lama, then even the ocean of oath-bound protectors will protect one from all obstacles and harms. As it says in the Gongpa Düpa Sutra: "If one does not break the word and protects the Dharma, then the Dharma protectors and powerful guardians will always protect one like a child." Fifth, there is no other way to increase the wealth of qualities, so it is appropriate to rely on the one who also has no other way to perfect qualities. Relying on the lama is the reason for abundance. In order to have the wealth of qualities of liberation in the beginning, middle, and end, rely on him with great respect and reverence. Even if one is ignorant and knows nothing, if one relies on a spiritual friend, then the special qualities of Dharma will arise in one's mind, because he is the source of all qualities. Beginners who seek the path of liberation and desire liberation, and who strive for it with desire, as well as those who have entered the path in the middle and are studying, who wish to transcend the realm of demons, and who wish to attain higher qualities, and those who ultimately wish to attain enlightenment in unsurpassed enlightenment, are all those who are directed towards the fruit of liberation.
