That is to be understood in three ways: identifying the place from which to hear, explaining how to hear, and determining the actual meaning of what is heard. First, regarding the place to hear, there are two advices: to rely on the virtuous friend who is conducive, and to abandon the evil friend who is obstructive. Among these, the way to rely on a virtuous friend is: to show the appearance of the vessel and essence. Then it says: "To cross the ocean of suffering of samsara, rely on the glorious lama who is the captain." Samsara is vast, so the far shore of beginning and end is not visible. It is deep, so it is deep and bottomless from below. It is violent, so the course of karma will enter anywhere. It is difficult to endure, so the vortex of the flood is turbulent. Upwards, the peak of existence is made the surface of the sea. Downwards, the ground of Naraka is the bottom of the sea. In between, gods, humans, and evil destinies swirl in the depths of the sea. It is difficult to escape by any means, and in this sea full of various kinds of suffering, fierce crocodiles play. Therefore, one should embark on the ship of the supreme Dharma, adorned with the captain-like lama at the helm, and one must cross this precious human body now obtained. If one does not strive, later one will fall into the abyss of samsara and evil destinies, and there will be no time for liberation. Therefore, having generated the mind of liberation, just as those who wish to cross a river first pray to the boatman, those who embark on the ship of Dharma and wish to cross the ocean of existence must first rely on the lama's boat-holding helmsman, and therefore one must strive to please him. Moreover, the lama one relies on must also be endowed with characteristics. Even just to cross a river, one relies on a good boat and a skilled and powerful boatman. How much more so to be liberated from the endless river of samsara! Therefore, relying on a lama who is proficient in Dharma and possesses the qualities of realization is the supreme and precious instruction cherished by those who desire liberation. Among these, the characteristics of a true lama are many, but here they are summarized into seven to explain. First, explaining the characteristics of a wish-fulfilling gem-like supreme lama: that is, possessing skillful means and immeasurable compassion, possessing the treasury of sutras and tantras like a wish-fulfilling gem, guiding beings, and being without

The perfect master with complete qualities is like a real Buddha in this degenerate age. Serve him with great respect and devotion on the crown of your head. Moreover, he is skilled in the methods of accomplishing great benefits with minimal effort, and he bestows immeasurable benefits on others with compassion and without weariness. Regarding the scriptures of the Sugata, the meaning of the Sutras and Tantras, he possesses a vast treasury of Dharma with the immaculate eye of extensive learning. With immeasurable enlightened activities, he reverses the destiny of beings and guides them to the path of liberation. His body, speech, and mind are free from the defilement of negativity, devoid of all faults, and he fulfills all the desires of oneself and others, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, a master who grants all wishes. Nowadays, in this degenerate age, he is no different from a real Buddha, so it is advised to serve him on the crown of your head with great faith. As it is said in the "King of the Array of Qualities Sutra": 'Son of good family, you should rely on those virtuous friends who are learned, clear, and completely moistened with compassion.' The second characteristic is that the master with complete inherent qualities is of noble birth, possesses shame and modesty, and has complete faculties. He has great love and compassion, vast wisdom, is learned, his body, speech, and mind are tamed, and he possesses great patience. He is honest and sincere, without hypocrisy or deceit. Like a wish-fulfilling jewel, he is revered on the crown of the head with a hundredfold faith. The qualities of lineage, born into noble families such as royalty, possess a strong sense of shame and modesty. Having accumulated merit in previous lives, his faculties are complete and pure. Born into the Mahayana lineage, he possesses great love and compassion. Skilled in the nature of the supreme vehicle, his mind is broad. The karmic imprints of previous practice awaken, so he possesses innate wisdom. Because attachment and afflictions are small, he is tamed and possesses patience. Because he seeks the names of the Dharma, he is extensively learned. His body, speech, and mind are naturally tamed, so he is honest and without hypocrisy. Abandoning inferior conduct, he has faith in the true state. As it is said in the 'Compendium of Intentions': 'Of noble birth, with a peaceful mind, a tamed heart, possessing dignity and majesty, not entering into worldly affairs.' Regarding the qualities of knowledge, there is no end to learning. Possessing immeasurable and vast wisdom. Able to endure adverse conditions, always upright. Honest and sincere, conduct without hypocrisy. Abandoning vulgar worldly affairs. Free from agitation and distraction, he frequents solitary places. Whoever possesses these qualities is a holy being.
