For those who indulge excessively, corresponding sufferings such as heat, cold, hunger, thirst, killing, dismemberment, beatings with weapons and sticks, robbery, harm, discomfort, and various other kinds of suffering will appear. Furthermore, the pleasant results arising from one's own previous virtuous deeds are: ghosts obtaining food and so on, experiencing slight comfort. In the alternation of day and night, there is occasional relief from suffering. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas emanate light through their miraculous powers, pacifying suffering, and this is the result of virtuous deeds. Whether it be gods, demigods, humans, or evil destinies, in any situation, the results of one's own previous virtuous deeds will follow. Wherever one is born, one will have a beautiful appearance, or inner peace, or obtain food and drink, or be adorned with fame and praised, or be very powerful, or even experience slight comfort from resting on the road. Although this is due to the circumstance of resting, the fundamental cause is virtuous deeds. No matter what the conditions for happiness arise from, it should be seen as the result of virtuous deeds. Even temporary happiness or becoming a dragon, the happiness that changes from day to night or morning to evening is the result of virtuous deeds. In hells and so on, or when afflicted by illness, the slight comfort felt occasionally is also to be recognized as the result of virtuous deeds. In the hells and so on, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas emanate light to bring comfort, although the external condition is the light of the Buddha, the fundamental cause is one's own accumulation of karma that brings about the happiness of receiving light. Like this, if happiness and suffering occur simultaneously in one body and mind, it is due to alternating manifestations of karma. For people, the appearances of various kinds of happiness such as dwelling, enjoyment, retinue, fame, wealth, long life, and freedom from illness, as well as sufferings such as birth, old age, sickness, and death, separation from loved ones, meeting with enemies, unwanted things, separation from loved ones, decline of wealth, being afflicted by poverty, being unpraised, heat, cold, hunger, thirst, and various other numerous and unbearable sufferings, all these are due to the karma of one's own deluded appearances. Like this, mixed karma brings happiness.

The experience of mixed suffering and happiness is: Even if one is born as a human being, whether these occur alternately in one's own continuum or in different continua, there are good dwellings, great wealth, comfortable beds, many attendants, fame, fulfillment of desires, longevity, few illnesses, or being treated as a guest with a share of happiness for a day or a brief moment and obtaining wealth, or feeling happy by seeing flowers and other pleasing sights. There are also rains of suffering, such as birth, aging, sickness, death, fear of separation from relatives and friends, encountering enemies, the occurrence of undesirable things, worrying about losing close friends, diminishing wealth, the decline of former achievements such as reputation, becoming distressed, bad words, heat and cold, hunger and thirst, fatigue, drowsiness, displeasure, and other unpleasant appearances. These are also due to the power of different karmas. As it is said in the Sutra on Mindfulness, "Karma creates various things, like a painter." The Asuras who dwell in the interior of Mount Meru and other places, although they naturally possess the glory of the gods, are constantly fighting and uneasy because they are jealous of the glory of the gods. They harm each other, are unsubmissive and cruel. Gardens adorned with garlands of flowers, nectar-like food, multi-storied buildings, vehicles, etc., are enjoyed in great abundance but never satisfy. Asuras are afflicted by the heavy karma of jealousy from the past, and by nature, they suffer from the wealth of others, even unbearably, and are full of pain and anger. Therefore, they constantly fight and are uneasy. They also become angry and harm each other because they cannot bear each other's happiness, and they are always in immeasurable suffering with their minds unable to be calmed. Because of the meritorious deeds of completion, there are gardens hung with nets of jewels༼༡༽, nectar-like food, multi-storied buildings༼༢༽, horses, elephants, chariots, and other vehicles, as well as clothes, jewels, and inexhaustible enjoyments produced from trees like the wish-fulfilling trees of the gods.
