If there is no cause, it would exist in all places as it exists in one place, and it would exist at all times as it exists at one time, just as the shape of a pot exists in a blanket ༼༡༽, or it would become undifferentiated, because all dependencies would be without distinction. It is permissible to depend on conditions, because it is permissible for a pot to be placed in that place and moved to another place. The Pramāṇaviniścaya says: Because there is no cause and it does not depend on others, it will become either permanent or non-existent. Some things arise from dependence on conditions. So it is said. Secondly, because efforts to obtain crops and fruits through agriculture and the like would be interrupted, because there is no cause. Without a cause, even if one strives in agriculture, the fruit of the harvest will not arise. The Bodhicaryāvatāra says: If some things arise merely from no cause, then everything would always arise from everything, and for the sake of producing fruit, the seeds and so forth of this world would not be collected through hundreds of thousands of means. So it is said. Thirdly, since it is seen that smoke arises from fire, sprouts arise from seeds, and the sound of a drum arises from striking a stick, the absence of a cause has been refuted, so there is no need to argue. Fourthly, it is not permissible to say that everything is without cause, because the word "without cause" does not arise without the tongue and palate touching, so this is also refuted by one's own words. Fifthly, saying that there is no cause would become meaningless, because it is impossible for the words to generate understanding in the other person. The example that is not established is: the cause of the sun rising is the sun itself, and the cause of water flowing downwards is the water itself, because it is impossible for parts to be both the producer and the produced in one substance, because depending on one cause, the qualities of being produced and not produced contradict each other, so they would become different substances. The Pramāṇavārttika says: Just as thorns and so forth, some sharp things have no cause, therefore some say that they are without cause. Whatever arises, whatever is produced, whatever changes, whatever is transformed, that is well shown as the cause of that, and those also exist in those. So it is said. Clouds are also water vapor lifted by the wind, and the world

Moreover, the causes such as clouds are carried by the wind from other worlds to here, and then spread out and fall as rain, etc. All of this is accomplished by the common karmic cause. The Treasury of Knowledge says: "Karma gives rise to various kinds of worlds." If asked: Are there some unseen things without cause? Answer: No. Just like smoke arises from fire, although there is a cause hidden, the result is clearly visible, so all things arise from cause. Therefore, all causes and effects at the time of birth are like illusions and dreams. If analyzed, it will be known that they have no self-nature. This contradicts the self-system. The Garland of Victory says: "Here, the virtuous and non-virtuous, the deeds done by oneself will not be destroyed. Therefore, abandon the sins, son of the spear." That's why it is said. There are three ways to refute self-ignorance with wisdom: the fault of becoming non-wisdom, the fault of not recognizing the object, and the fault of mental confusion. The first is because it is the nature of self-awareness and the stage of self-awareness, so just by returning from self-ignorance, it will become self-awareness. The Ornament of the Middle Way says: "From the nature of the consciousness aggregate, returning and extremely arising, whatever is not the nature of the aggregate, that here is called self-nature wisdom." Therefore, if one does not know oneself, it will become the fault of not even being wisdom, because it is separated from the pervasiveness of wisdom. The second is that that wisdom will become the fault of never recognizing the object, because of self-ignorance. That is to say, for a pot to be established by eye consciousness, it must be established that eye consciousness itself exists. The Compendium of Valid Cognition says: "If the object is not directly perceived, it will never be possible to fully establish the meaning." If you say that it is known by other wisdom, that is also not possible. Because it is not reasonable for it to be ultimately established or not established, and it is not reasonable for it to be simultaneous or not simultaneous. Ultimately, if the knower is established, it has the same reason as eye consciousness, and if it is not established, then the pot will never be established. If it is established at the same time, it will become the fault of being multiple entities. If it is established by a later knower, then it is not established when the pot exists, and later it is established when it does not exist, which would be the fault of being established in reverse, because the times are contradictory. The Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life says: "Because it arises simultaneously with the mind, feeling cannot see it, arising before and after also
