Furthermore, for a mere non-entity, since it lacks any inherent power, there is no basis for establishing it as a direction. (1) The non-establishment of space means that when nothing is established, it is merely labeled as "space." Even in conventional terms, there is no space, because the gray in between is appearance, and the black is darkness, so it is not established for anyone or anything. Therefore, it is merely calling illusion "space." The Garland of Jewels says: Because there is no substance of form, space is also just a name. So it is said. The perception of seeing space is said to be foolish. The Four Hundred says: Ordinary people think they have clearly seen space, but the wise and worldly people have not seen its meaning. So it is said. The Compendium says: Sentient beings often say they see space, but how can space be seen? Consider this meaning. Thus, seeing the Dharma is also taught by the Thus-Gone One. The metaphor for seeing cannot be compared by others. So it is said. The Mother Sutra says: In the realm of space, there is no fixed characteristic of the east, nor of the south, west, north, above, below, or intermediate directions. Space is not round, not square, not blue, not yellow, not past, not future, and not present. Space has no birth, cessation, abiding, or change. Space is neither knowable nor attainable. Space is neither with form nor without form. Space is neither permanent nor impermanent. Space is neither light nor darkness. It is said that space opens up the opportunity for limitless sentient beings, but because there are no sentient beings, one should understand that there is no space. Because there is no space, one should understand that there is no Mahayana. Therefore, it is said that Mahayana is also just established by conceptual thought, and does not exist in reality. If you think that when debating with non-Buddhists, the inner Buddhist scriptures cannot be used as a basis for argument, that is not the case, because after refuting with reason, the scriptures are cited. Therefore, it is necessary to respectfully acknowledge that the teachings of the all-knowing Buddha are reliable. There are two ways to refute impermanence: the non-establishment of parts and the non-establishment of impermanence.
