Where is annihilation if there is no permanence? All three hundred and sixty views converge on the view of the perishable aggregate. As stated in the Compendium, 'Just as sixty-two views are contained within the view of the perishable aggregate.' This has already been refuted. However, since everything converges on the two views of permanence and annihilation, the refutation of these is: There is no permanence because all objects and consciousness change, and they cannot withstand examination in any gross or subtle aspect, so they cannot serve as a basis for permanence. There is no annihilation because things that appear to exist depend on their respective causes and conditions, and things that do not exist, such as space, are not established as causes of annihilation, so annihilation is not established. If you say that the self (ātman, आत्मन्, ātman, soul) is permanent, is it one with or different from the aggregates (skandha, स्कन्ध, skandha, heap)? If it is one, then just as the aggregates arise and cease, so too will the self arise and cease. If it is different, then the self apart from the five aggregates cannot be found. Because the coarse atom and the subtle nature of the moment cannot be established, the self cannot be established. As stated in the Root Verses on the Middle Way, 'If the aggregates were the self, then it would be subject to arising and ceasing. But if it were other than the aggregates, it would lack the characteristics of the aggregates.' It is like that. If you say that the self is not permanent, but the continuum of the self is permanent, so the self is permanent, that is also not valid. As stated in the Two Truths, 'Continuum and moment, like a row of soldiers, are false.' According to this reasoning, if the continuum is a row of moments, then the three moments of past, future, and present cannot meet, and because it has no parts, it cannot be a moment or a continuum, so it is refuted. Furthermore, if you say that the self exists because it can pervade sentient beings and perform actions, that is also unreasonable. If it performs actions, does it do so all at once or gradually? If it does so all at once, then the fault of a young child turning into an old person in an instant is observed. If it does so gradually, then because the previous one has ceased and the later one has not yet arisen, there is no collection, so there is no ability to perform actions. Moreover, because the agent and the action are contradictory substances, it is also unreasonable. If you cling to annihilation, then the assertion that everything is without cause, etc., is refuted as before. Now, summarizing all these tenets and doctrines, they are shown as five Tirthika (non-Buddhist) schools: Nature, manifold, possessing, various, these are the Samkhya, Vaisheshika, Lokayata, Ajivika, and Pūraṇa Kāśyapa schools, these are the five. The outsiders are revealed as limitless through the distinctions of various names.

The saying "earth deities are born as humans" refers to what is stated in the treatise of the Black Lord of Power: "Dust, darkness, and fortitude, when these qualities coexist, are highly proclaimed as 'the chief'; when they are unequal, they are said to be 'travelers'." That chief also possesses five characteristics: being material, being eternal, being singular, being the agent of travelers, and being invisible, thus being hidden. The meaning of material is that it is without consciousness and not considered to have form, thus it is shown to be unseen by anyone. Eternal means existing from beginningless to endless. Singular means that there is only one chief pervading all knowable things. The agent of travelers means that all containers and contents arise from the chief. Invisible means that it is unseen by others except those who have attained the eye of meditative concentration, such as the Samkhyas. Although the eternal and singular one can be seen with the eye of meditative concentration, even the Samkhyas cannot see it with the eye of flesh, so it is called unseen by all. That is, it can be seen with the eye of meditative concentration but not with the eye of flesh, thus it is twofold. That chief itself exists in the nature of things because it is liberated from other non-existent things, and it is pervasive in all things because it pervades happiness, suffering, and equanimity, which is proof in itself. In the Black Lord of Power it says: "Displeasure and complete suffering, sorrow and strife, sometimes also appear, these are considered signs of dust. Ignorance and likewise delusion, heedlessness, sleep, and distraction, sometimes also appear, these are the qualities of darkness. Joy, satisfaction, and delight, happiness and the nature of peaceful mind, sometimes also appear, these are the qualities of fortitude." It is said that these three transform from an unequal state, and "great" is a synonym for intelligence, possessing the three qualities of being material, having form, and enjoying the realm of the person. Material means being without mind and without form. Having form means that images appear, like intelligence being a house of glass, where form, sound, smell, taste, and touch appear from the outside, and the image of the self appears from the inside, and the two images are mixed together, which is called the self enjoying the realm.
