Is it permanent or impermanent? Both? Neither? There are four possibilities. Does the Tathagata exist after passing away? Does he not exist? Both? Neither? There are four possibilities. Are the body and life one? Are they different? Both? Neither? If asked in this way, it is not permissible to answer according to the question. If one temporarily accepts permanence, then the basis for investigation is not established because coarse things do not have indivisible particles. In terms of convention, it is refuted by the change of time, such as moments. Subtle things cannot be permanent because their nature is not established. If one examines cessation, there is no reason for cessation because there is no basis. In terms of convention, it is refuted by the appearance of the objects of each sense faculty. Furthermore, if the basis is not established, there can be no different qualities, just like the sharpness and dullness of a rabbit's horn. Moreover, if one asks whether something like a pillar is permanent, and the answer is permanent; if one asks whether it is impermanent, and the answer is impermanent, etc., this answer is not established on that basis, just as when there is appearance, there is no darkness. The son of the naked ascetic friend believes that everything is karma, that happiness arises from past ascetic practices, and that suffering arises here from past bad deeds, because new karma has absolutely no present power. Because whatever past karma there is, it now manifests, therefore one experiences happiness and suffering. Therefore, one should strive to purify karma through asceticism, etc. If there were power in the present, then if a mute person practiced asceticism, etc., he would directly be able to speak, which is impossible, so it is clear. Therefore, the defilements produced by past karma will gradually be exhausted, and in the end, not one will remain, just like crops ripening. There are three refutations to this: a general refutation of the self-nature of karma, a refutation that only karma is the cause, and a refutation of past karma. The first is further divided into three: refuting the essence of karma, refuting the agent, and refuting the ripening. The first is: karma itself is not established as a substance, because the karma of killing, etc., is neither the same as one's own body and mind, nor is it other.

English

It is contradictory. Neither the killer nor the non-killer, nor both killer and non-killer, can establish the act of killing, because the two are real contradictions and cannot exist in the same thing." "Furthermore, if the time of killing is divided into three parts, then for the part without momentary division, the act of killing cannot be established. It is not permissible to kill what has already been killed, because the agent and the object are contradictory. It is also unreasonable to kill what has not yet been killed, because when the present killer exists, the object to be killed has not yet been born, so it does not exist." "It is also not permissible for the present to be the object to be killed and the killer, because the moment has no divided parts. It is also not permissible to kill what is being killed, because the two parts of the agent and the object are contradictory. There is no other killing in progress other than what has been killed and not killed, because it is a real contradiction. Subtle karma does not exist in things, so it will lead to no killing. The act of killing itself is not established. The refutation of the ripening result is: for example, the ripening result of killing a sheep is to experience the suffering of hell, which is impossible for the author to be permanent, because if it is permanent, then it is impossible to change when creating karma, so it is impossible to experience the suffering of hell. If it is impermanent, then it is also impossible to experience, because when born in hell, the person who killed the sheep has died, so it is not the original person. It is also not produced from the continuous continuation of moments, because the moment has no divided parts, so the continuation cannot be established. The karma established by the continuation cannot be established. As it is said, in front of the Dragon King: If karma has its own nature, then there is no doubt that it will become permanent. Karma is not created, because permanent dharma is not created. It is also said: If these dharmas do not come from dharma nature, and have no place to go, then how can karma and the ripening of karma be reasonable? In the ultimate truth, there is no place to come from, and there is no place to go. In the conventional truth, the road is entered, and the ripening result is shown to be near. It is also said: In the 'Garland of Views', it is said: In the ultimate truth, there is no karma, and there is no ripening result of karma. Refuting that only karma is the cause: If all happiness and suffering are only past karma, then when the hunter kills the monkey, the hunter will not generate sin, because it is the monkey's own past karma. When giving alms, the giver will not generate merit, because it is the karma of the beggar. Jataka Tales
