Those who are dominated by this life turn their backs on the path of liberation, Virtue and goodness diminish, and non-virtue increases. Furthermore, one is influenced by whomever one associates with, By relying on the ignorant, hearing, thought, and wisdom decline. From the angry, unwholesome habits arise in one's own mind. From the greedy, attachment to objects increases. With excessive pride, one becomes biased and clings to duality. With excessive jealousy, the thorn of competitiveness arises. Associating with gossips, all faults are transmitted. With those who lack renunciation and only seek happiness in this life, With those who love to give advice, those who play and flirt, With those who crave power and wealth, those who pursue profit, And with those who are just workers, etc., The bad habits of their behavior are transmitted. The fault of associating with the ignorant is, Ignorance of the objects of knowledge and filled with bias, Not knowing the path of liberation, one goes on the wrong path. Associating with those who lack faith and diligence, virtue diminishes, One becomes lazy in practice, and faith and respect decline. Associating with the Lesser Vehicle, one is fond of solitude and peace, With little mental strength and no compassion for the benefit of others, One has many faults that contradict the meaning of the Great Vehicle. With those who lack view and samadhi, and whose discipline is lax, Cultivating mundane knowledge and seeking gain, Clinging to meaningless solitude and having an empty view, Associating with those who are without experience and only know how to talk, They will influence each other and follow meaningless words, Becoming like parrots repeating words. Associating with these people obstructs the path of liberation, Virtue diminishes, and even the state of a good rebirth cannot be achieved, What need is there to mention the achievement of peaceful enlightenment? Therefore, one should abandon evil friends. Just as travelers walking on a dangerous road, fear being attacked by robbers, They will only take away the wealth and life of this life, But they cannot take away lasting happiness. The beings who rely on bad spiritual friends, Are rebuked by the holy ones and abandoned by the white-sided gods, Leading to many harms and sufferings, and ruin in this life, In the next life, they fall into the lower realms and wander in the ocean of samsara. Those who are separated from the supreme treasure of happiness and do not fear, That kind of person is deceived by the demon. Just as in the world, there are also examples of discrimination, When choosing goods to transport, one distinguishes between good and bad, But for those who desire liberation, there is no questioning or examination of spiritual friends, Such foolish wisdom will be destroyed by the army of demons, And they will even trade in inferior goods.

Even so, if you don't understand something, ask others. Nowadays, people enter the path of Dharma casually." "Without the eye of wisdom, hearing and thinking are just superficial phenomena. Those with eyes have no intention of asking others. Many who desire liberation are deceived by demons. Here, examine and abandon evil friends. That merit is immeasurable. You will not fall into wrong paths, and good roots will constantly increase. You will be praised by the noble ones, and your merits will be perfected." "Memory, concentration, and wisdom are vast. Here is happiness, and the next life is also good. You can smoothly reach the banks of the heavenly Ganges, and you can see the Buddha lands filled with the wealth of bodhisattvas. From the Great Vehicle's pith instructions, the treatise 'Wish-Fulfilling Treasure,' the ninth chapter: Abandoning Evil Friends." "" "Thus, having abandoned evil friends and fully relied on virtuous spiritual friends, from that, first, the wisdom of hearing arises. It is said that this is the root of liberation. Therefore, when the supreme lama, who possesses the ten qualities of extensive learning, teaches the sacred Dharma to fortunate disciples," "First, it is important to examine the disciple's capacity. Just as food differs for children and the elderly, so too does the Dharma have different natures. Then, explain it gradually in a guided manner. In this way, one can understand the order of the vehicles, increase merit, and have no fear or dread. There is no error, and view and conduct are combined. If it is not explained in this way, the faults are immeasurable, because the order of above and below, before and after, is lacking." "" "The general order of the teachings declines, small-minded people fear and abandon wrong views, they do not understand the sequence, they cannot deeply comprehend, they despise conditioned virtuous deeds, it becomes a cause for slander, and cause and effect are confused." "They do not know what to accept and reject, and are ignorant of the meaning of what is to be known. They abandon the Mahayana mind of enlightenment and compassion, possess an empty view, are deceived by evil paths, say there is nothing to do, and remain in an ordinary state. They proclaim secrets to immature beings. Because there are many faults, the vehicles should be explained in order. The Dharma to be explained is the types of vehicles," "All the places of what is to be known, what to accept and reject. For those who are beginners, explain cause and effect. For those who have entered the path, explain the types of vehicles. For those who practice benefiting others, explain the five sciences, etc.
