In the center of the lotus petals, at the heart and the four cardinal points, from the crowns of the father deities, single forms appear, and from the complete ornaments, forms with consorts appear. From the heart, appearing as large or small as a shield, a thread of light like a bundle of five-colored rays connects to one's own heart. One's own body also appears as a wheel of light, spiraling upwards from the crown of the head, with five or nine stacked bindus, each the size of a flat stone. Gradually, the appearance of one's own gross, substantial body diminishes, until finally, only the size of a finger remains visible, at which point it is said that "awareness has reached its limit," because no further effort in meditation is required, and one simply abides in that state. Here, the great teacher Padmasambhava considers the complete arising of the appearance of the union of father and mother deities as the limit of awareness, while Vimalamitra considers it to be the entire process from the first sight of the body's appearance to its completion. Moreover, during the increase of experience, the appearances may move or flicker slightly, but at the limit, they remain still. At these times, signs of the birth of noble wisdom arise, because seeing the appearance of the essence of the nature of reality itself, one sees all the Buddha fields, hears the Dharma, distinguishes light and miracles, obtains countless samadhis, and manifests emanations, and so on. The fourth meaning, the appearance of the exhaustion of the nature of reality, is called exhaustion because the arising of those appearances ceases, the appearance of the substantial body ceases, and the disturbing thoughts of the winds cease. The nature of reality is the pure, clear light of the essence of reality. At this time, only the size of outstretched fingers appears within the light, and nothing else appears as substantial. At this time, because one has obtained independence over birth, a vajra body without birth or death is accomplished. If one wishes to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings with that body, like Vimalamitra and Padmasambhava, they consider it to be a body of great transference, like the moon in water, and thus accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. For the three thousand sentient beings in the bardo, they accomplish the benefit of liberation in a single instant by merging a single wisdom. Moreover, by looking at one's own fingers, they become coarser and return, and one sees appearances and sentient beings as illusions and reflections of the moon in water, and one accomplishes their benefit in accordance with their thoughts.

Having gained freedom, even if consciousness is placed in inanimate objects, they will move and make sounds. If consciousness is placed in intermediate state beings, liberation will occur. If the previous body cannot accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, abandon looking at the fingers, abide in the state of clear light without wavering, and the fingers will also dissolve into light. The outer appearing clear light, the inner aggregate clear light, and the secret awareness clear light, all three are liberated in the youthful vase body (zhon nu bum pa sku'i zhing) field of the inner clear primordial ground, abiding in the state of the unchanging Dharmakaya, the great self-illuminating Sambhogakaya, and the uninterrupted manifestation of the Nirmanakaya, without wavering from the understanding of the inseparability of body and wisdom. Without moving from that state, in the realms of the world, from the inner clear light, the outer clear light spontaneously arises as a dense arrangement, and from self-appearance, for the tenth-level Bodhisattvas, there are five kinds of bodies, and for ordinary beings, Sravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas, there are supreme emanations, and in all realms of sentient beings, there are skillful means and birth emanations, appearing as teachers for each being, until samsara is empty, the vast benefit of others is spontaneously accomplished without interruption. Therefore, when striving to practice in that way, it concludes with four ultimate instructions, establishing the foundation with three immovables, measuring with three abidings, fixing with three attainments, and measuring the degree of liberation with four confidences. First, the body is immovable, not exceeding three postures; the eyes are immovable, not exceeding three ways of looking; the prana and awareness are immovable, abiding in a slow, unadulterated state, without distraction. Second, when meditating in that way, outer appearances abide, adverse conditions appear as helpers; the inner illusory body abides, free from deluded actions; the secret prana mind abides, it is impossible for conceptual thoughts to arise. At this time, there will be signs appearing in the body and speech, and the degree will be measured by dreams. That is, when the nature of reality is directly realized, without wavering from the way of entering, the body is like a turtle placed in its shell, speech is reduced, like a mute, and the mind does not waver from single-pointed concentration, like a bird caught in glue. When the experience increases, the body does not deliberately cling to clothes and ornaments.
