༄༅། །The Lamp of Essential Practice. Homage. To the glorious lama who grants supreme accomplishment, and to the ocean of oath-bound ḍākinīs. For those fortunate ones who desire liberation in one lifetime, I write this Lamp of Essential Practice. Here, the instructions of the Manifest Heart Essence of the Clear Light Vajra Essence Vehicle are threefold: superior diligence leading to liberation in this life, intermediate diligence leading to liberation in the bardo, and inferior diligence leading to liberation in the realm of the Nirmāṇakāya. The first has four: the appearance of the manifestation of dharmatā, the appearance of the increase of experience, the appearance of the maturity of awareness, and the appearance of the exhaustion of dharmatā. The first also has two: the way to enter the instructions, and the order of how to practice after entering. The first is that a qualified lama, generally skilled in the meaning of all vehicles, possessing the complete qualities of love, compassion, and bodhicitta, who guides others, and especially one who has gained insight into the words and meaning of the unsurpassed secret mantra, possessing the warmth of view, meditation, conduct, and result, should guide a qualified student who has respect for the lama, is generous and has great pure perception, abides by samaya and instructions, is diligent in practicing liberation and enlightenment, and is intelligent and open-minded, making them a suitable vessel. First, please the lama, then tame your mindstream through the stages of the maturing empowerment. In order to enter the meaning of manifest clear light, entrust yourself to the ninefold activities. That is, with the body, external activities such as trade and agriculture, worldly busyness and distraction; internal activities such as common dharma practices, prostrations and circumambulations; secret activities such as uncommon mudrā dances. In short, abandon all the elaborations of the moving body. With speech, external activities such as idle talk and harsh words, the speech of ordinary worldly people; internal activities such as common recitations and readings; secret activities such as uncommon recitations. In short, abandon all activities of speaking. With the mind, external activities such as worldly thoughts; internal activities such as common contemplation and reflection on the dharma; secret activities such as all contrived meditations such as the uncommon generation stage. In short, abandon remembrance and thinking.

Having relinquished all mental distractions, one should rely on the three doors of body, speech, and mind in a state of tranquility. Secondly, the stages of how to meditate after entering are threefold: preliminary practice of pressing with key points, the main practice of introducing recognition, and subsequent practice of experiential cultivation. Firstly, in an extremely secluded place, having mastered the preliminary practices of body, speech, and mind, one should train in the five key points, namely, the key point of the body, adopting any of the three postures. The posture of the Dharmakaya, like a lion: sit in a majestic posture, with the two shoulder blades drawn inward, the two soles of the feet facing forward, placed in the center, the neck straightened, and the eyes gazing intently at the sky above. Some believe that placing the soles of the feet on the ground, squatting, and placing the palms of the hands on the ground on either side is appropriate, but this seems to be a slight misunderstanding of the intention. The posture of the Sambhogakaya, like a sleeping elephant: with the knees and chest together, the two soles of the feet facing outward, the two elbows placed on the ground, the palms supporting the cheeks, and the eyes looking straight ahead. The posture of the Nirmanakaya, like a hermit squatting: squatting, with the hands crossed on the knees, the palms covering the elbows, and the eyes looking slightly downward. Whichever posture is adopted, it should not be like being bound or curled up, but rather relaxed in every part, which is the most important key point. The key point of speech, training in any of the three ways of gazing: the way of gazing of the Dharmakaya, like looking upwards at the crown of the head. The way of gazing of the Sambhogakaya, like looking sideways, like a Brahmin holding up a bamboo stick. The way of gazing of the Nirmanakaya, like looking slightly downwards, like a hermit meditating in contemplation. In whichever way of gazing, the eyes should not move, but be clear and relaxed, which is the key point. The key point of breath is to be extremely slow, that is, not exhaling through the nose, but guiding it through the mouth, with the inward and outward flow being equal. In the beginning, one should slightly restrain it inward, but without effort. In particular, when faith, renunciation, and samadhi increase, one should slowly hold it inward in its natural state, without completely exhaling it. When afflictions and unpleasantness arise, one should forcefully exhale and slightly hold the breath outward, which is the key point. The key point of the object of focus: looking at the surface of a cloudless sky, and at the tip of the sun.
