Having contemplated, one should contemplate the impermanence of one's own life. As the "Extensive Play Sutra" says: "Conditioned existence is impermanent, like autumn clouds. This body that is taken up will decay and separate. The four seasons are impermanent, changing and without essence. Aging and decay are subject to death. There is no abiding for an instant, a moment, a split second. The life of a person passes like water falling from a steep cliff." Thus it is. Second, the method of cultivating loving-kindness: Thus, all sentient beings in samsara, when wandering in samsara without beginning, are all kind parents. Therefore, may all of them meet with perfect happiness. As the "Great Compassion Sutra" says: "The nature of loving-kindness towards sentient beings, is the sole, unsurpassed medicine tree of happiness. May it pervade all, possessing clouds of compassion. The supreme non-dual wisdom abides." Thus it is. Third, compassion: May sentient beings who are suffering, such as those in the three lower realms, be free from all suffering. As it is also said in the "Sutra Requested by the Daughter Moon Supreme": "Seeing the multitude of beings suffering, with unbearable compassion, may they be free from suffering. Constantly and solely acting for their benefit, I prostrate to that tree of compassion." Thus it is. Fourth, the mind of enlightenment: Thus, may I separate these sentient beings of samsara from the four rivers of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and quickly attain the state of Buddhahood. As the "Array of the Trunk" says: "O son of good family, may these sentient beings wandering in samsara abide in the enlightenment of the Buddhas. Thus, the accumulation of merit of this unsurpassed and immeasurable mind of enlightenment is immeasurable." Thus it is. The necessity of cultivating in this way is that life is impermanent, thereby turning the mind away from worldly affairs, and whatever is done becomes Dharma; with the three, loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, thereby turning the mind away from the Hinayana, and whatever is done becomes for the benefit of others. As "Vast Clarity" says: "Impermanence, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, enter the Dharma and go on the path of the Mahayana." Thus it is. If one does not cultivate in this way, there will be faults contrary to it. Second, the uncommon, one's own preliminary practices, the outer body, speech, and mind,

Branching and Preliminary Practices: Distinguishing the Root and Purifying Obscurations of the Inner Body, Speech, and Mind. Among the three aspects of secretly settling and restoring the Body, Speech, and Mind to their natural state, the first is the Body, Speech, and Mind. Within the Body, there are two aspects: distinguishing the root and the preliminary practices. First, from the perspective of consequentialism: "If the root of cyclic existence and nirvana is not distinguished, then the connection of the three realms through body, speech, and mind will not be severed. Therefore, it is taught to distinguish the root of cyclic existence and nirvana." Thus, this body is born from ignorance and constantly wanders in cyclic existence. To prevent it from wandering in cyclic existence from now on, the distinction between the body and cyclic existence is: From the past, "To perform the preliminary practices of the body, engage in various behaviors of the six realms, and engage in the practices of the Three Jewels." Thus, go to a deserted mountain and think, "Now, for the benefit of all sentient beings, I will distinguish the root of the body and cyclic existence, and this body will not return to cyclic existence." Then, mentally contemplate on oneself the sufferings of the hot and cold hells, the hunger and thirst of the pretas, the exploitation of animals, the birth and death of humans, the fighting of the asuras, and the suffering of the gods' death, transference, and falling. Remember all the experiences of happiness and suffering, and various sounds. Then, if there is no attachment to the body, no affirmation or negation, and no experience of hunger or thirst, it is a sign of separation. Repeat until that happens. The second, the actual preliminary practice, is: From the perspective of consequentialism: "With the vajra posture, discipline the body and benefit the mind." Thus, the vajra posture is to join the soles of the feet together and straighten the body. Join the hands together without touching the crown of the head, with the upper and lower points resembling a three-pointed vajra, and strive day and night. The signs are that the body aches, it cannot stand like a dilapidated house, warmth arises, and there are no discursive thoughts. The three upper points represent essence, nature, and compassion, the three lower points represent the three kayas, and the waist being joined as one represents that the practices of Trekchö and Tögal are of the same essence and are taken as the path. Thus, there are three necessities for doing the preliminary practices of the body: common, special, and ultimate. First, all the sins of the body are completely purified, and the body becomes a vajra fire.
