The four formless realms are the nine progressively abiding meditative stabilizations. Even when noble beings actualize and cultivate these states of mind, they are not born into them. So, why are ordinary beings born into them? Because during their respective meditations and formless absorptions, the coarse mental stabilization is called coarse. Since there is no coarseness like hatred, they are not born into lower realms. They perceive the higher realms as peaceful, and because they recognize them as possessing qualities, they grasp them as desirable and cultivate them with attachment, thus being born into higher and higher realms. So, even with such meditative stabilization, why do they still wander in samsara? Because they do not recognize their own nature, and the latent tendencies of self-grasping are present in the alaya-vijnana (store consciousness). Due to the lack of wisdom that realizes the absence of inherent existence in all phenomena, even when such meditative stabilization arises again and again, they still wander in samsara. As the noble Nagarjuna said: All the perfect meditations, such as those of Brahma, etc., Because the latent tendencies of self-grasping are not abandoned, Is it impossible to be born in hell after death? Furthermore, because that itself is meditation, mental proliferation and grasping at objects are diminished, and clairvoyance and direct perception arise. However, it only suppresses manifest afflictions. Since there is no genuine vipassana (insight), samsara continues. The Compendium says: Through meditation, one desires to despise the qualities of desire. One accomplishes lineage, clairvoyance, and meditative stabilization. Through wisdom, having fully understood the nature of phenomena, One will truly transcend the entirety of the three realms. Second, undistorted meditation. Thus, when abiding in the bliss and joy of the mind of meditative stabilization, which has great results, Whether a Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, or Bodhisattva, whichever path they have entered, they maintain meditative stabilization, which is clear and non-conceptual, through skillful means. How is it? Each one's path of seeing, with non-conceptual wisdom, directly sees what was previously unseen. Even though one first attains the state of a noble being with the mind of extremely joyful meditative stabilization, it appears small compared to higher wisdom, and thus a small divine mind arises. The first Bodhisattva ground is the Extremely Joyful Ground. By becoming accustomed to such a mind, Again, with a clear and non-conceptual mind, the noble one is born with the aspect of the eightfold noble path, and thus is separated from the suffering of afflictions and near afflictions, so they do not suffer.

mind. That is also three small paths of meditation, namely the second bodhisattva ground, the stainless ground, the third, the illuminating ground, and the fourth, the blazing ground, obtaining these three. Then, again, by becoming accustomed to that, the supreme noble wisdom, the chief, is obtained in an unprecedented way, namely the wondrous appearance, which is the three intermediate paths of meditation. The fifth bodhisattva ground is the difficult to train ground, the sixth is the manifest ground, and the seventh is the far-gone ground. Then, again, by becoming accustomed to that, one sees the noble wisdom as extremely pure, even more so than before, namely the extremely pure seeing, which is the three great paths of meditation. The eighth bodhisattva ground is the immovable ground, the ninth is the good intelligence ground, and the tenth is the cloud of dharma ground. Then, by thoroughly becoming accustomed to that, one's own afflictive obscurations and cognitive obscurations are purified, and one obtains the mind of nirvana with remainder, namely Akanistha (འོག་མིན), obtaining the ground of the arhat without obscurations. Bodhisattvas, having obtained the enjoyment body in Akanistha (འོག་མིན) with the wisdom of manifest enlightenment, wish to benefit sentient beings in hundreds of millions of Jambudvipa with hundreds of millions of emanations. Furthermore, some shravaka-pratyekabuddha noble ones take birth among those gods of the pure abodes and obtain arhatship, and some, from the basis of desire, manifest their minds and obtain arhatship. Bodhisattvas, solely on the basis of desire, manifest their minds and manifest the pure Buddha ground of self-appearance as Akanistha (འོག་མིན), and for the sake of sentient beings, the great ones who have obtained the bodhisattva ground wish to perform the activities of the enjoyment body and the emanation body for impure beings. Third, is showing how to go on the correct path. Thus, the four dhyanas, the four formless absorptions, and the one-pointed mind of cessation, these nine, if not grasped by special means, are the mind of samsara, and other than that, one still revolves in the three realms. If grasped, one goes on the three paths of liberation, small, medium, and large. That is to say, a person who wishes to be liberated from samsara for their own benefit, if grasped by the wisdom that realizes selflessness, and on top of that, realizes that external grasping is without inherent existence, then it becomes the path of the shravaka and pratyekabuddha.
