Explains how the (four dhyanas) are produced. Explains the difference between correct and incorrect. Shows the way to liberation on the correct path. First, in the meditation room, sit on a comfortable cushion. Possessing the seven-point posture, the preliminary practice for meditating on the first dhyana is to place the current consciousness in a state that is unmodified, unadulterated, clear, and without attachment. After some time, experiencing a clear and non-discriminating sensation, as well as subtle recollection and discrimination. Apart from the act of knowing emptiness and clarity, there are no other discriminations, and a clear mind arises newly and increasingly, which is small. Habituation to this leads to medium. Gaining stability leads to large, and these three arising are the actual practice of the first dhyana. From that clear part, clarity arises. From the clear part, like seeing all things without any obscuration or obstruction, the eye that sees the other side arises, as well as the extraordinary abilities to know the past and future places, and so on. If one is accustomed to the small practice of it (the first dhyana), one will be reborn in the Brahma community of the first dhyana after death. If one is accustomed to the medium practice of it, one will be reborn as a member of the retinue of the Great Brahma, so one will be reborn as a member of the Brahma community, or like a minister, one will be reborn as a Brahma before. If one is accustomed to the great practice of it, one will be reborn as the Great Brahma. The second dhyana arises from the cause of the stability of the first dhyana, so the one who has attained the first dhyana abides as before, which is the preliminary practice of the second dhyana. So, how is it? While abiding in the state of emptiness and clarity, even that subtle recollection and discrimination does not exist, and only emptiness and clarity are experienced, possessing the samadhi of attachment or action, which arises newly and increasingly, which is the actual practice of the second dhyana. If one is accustomed to the small practice of it, at the end of life, one will be reborn in the Lesser Light realm by the second dhyana. Medium practice will be reborn in the Immeasurable Light realm. Great practice will be reborn in the Clear Light realm. The third dhyana is also the same as the previous two. The preliminary practice is to abide in the state indicated by the actual practice of the second dhyana. Emptiness and clarity without any discrimination, the samadhi without attachment, arises newly and increasingly, which is the actual practice of the third dhyana. If one obtains the small of it, one will be reborn in the Lesser Virtue realm of the third dhyana. Medium will be reborn in the Immeasurable Virtue realm. Great will be reborn in the All-Pervading Virtue realm. The fourth dhyana has three realms of ordinary beings and five realms of noble ones. First is the fourth dhyana of ordinary beings. The preliminary practice is dhyana

Third, by meditating on the meaning of the reality shown, the non-suffering, non-pleasurable, clear, non-conceptual joy and bliss that arises from samadhi, which is different from before and even more excellent, is the reality of the fourth dhyana. If one becomes accustomed to it, the small one is cloudless, the medium one generates merit, and the large one increases the fruit. Second, explaining the difference between right and wrong: When the mind of great fruit, that is, the special joy and bliss of dhyana, arises and one abides single-pointedly in that state, if one only focuses on shamatha, one will wrongly be born in the formless realm; if one uses vipassana without conceptualization, one will be born in the other pure abodes of the noble ones, that is, the five pure abodes, and attain liberation. Furthermore, from that state of great-fruit samadhi, by becoming accustomed to the mind of shamatha that does not conceptualize anything, just as in the cloudless autumn sky, all dharmas are not established anywhere, and only the clarity of awareness is uninterrupted, a samadhi different from before arises, which is the attainment of the mind of the sphere of infinite space. Now, if one dies in the state of having attained that mind, one will be born there. Then, again, by becoming accustomed to that state, just as the clarity and purity like space also disappear, and the mind is focused inwardly on one point, with only the cessation of conceptual thoughts, a samadhi different from before arises, which is the attainment of the mind of the sphere of infinite consciousness. If one dies in the state of this mind, one will be born there. Then, by becoming accustomed to that state, just as only the cessation of elaboration inwardly, even the subtle feeling disappears, and a single-pointed, non-existent shamatha mind arises, different from before, this is the sphere of nothingness. Now, if one dies from being accustomed to this mind, all will be born there. Then, by becoming accustomed to that state, just as the mind that clings to nothingness also reaches a state of single-pointed concentration of shamatha that is neither existent nor non-existent, a state of dense, non-conceptualization arises that is different from before, which is called the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. If one becomes accustomed to this, but does not possess skillful means, one will be born there. This is called the attainment of the samadhi of the peak of existence. By relying on that basis and stopping feeling and perception, one attains the worldly samadhi of stopping feeling and perception, that is, the four dhyanas.
