Regarding the meaning of earth nature, it is summarized into three categories. The first category includes explaining delusion from an external perspective, explaining from an internal perspective, and explaining from a secret perspective. The first is as stated in the 'All-Illuminating': "The ground itself does not recognize its own face, delusion arises at the time of the arising of grasping and being grasped, and the vessel and essence of existence gradually form." And as stated in the 'Vast Clarity': "From wisdom itself, ignorance deludes, the colors of wisdom are the five elements, originally only wisdom itself, there is no separation, yet ignorance deludes." And as stated in the 'Great Array': "In the realm of spontaneously accomplished emptiness, it arises, at that time, from the wheel of delusion of the four conditions, it becomes bound with the fetters of grasping. From the elements of wind, water, fire, and earth, the distinctions of support and object arise. The ten places of formless, form, and desire initially arise." Therefore, due to not recognizing the spontaneously accomplished appearance of the luminous illusory palace as self-appearance, merely in terms of essence, with co-emergent ignorance as the cause, with the appearance of the object as light as the condition, with the movement of compassion's ability to grasp as the empowering condition, these three simultaneously acting as the function of the object, as the immediately following condition, delusion occurs into grasping and being grasped, losing from the palace of light and entering into the palace of karmic imprints. In terms of essence, in the realm of emptiness which is nothing, from the aspect of self-nature, light appears as self-nature and image. From the aspect of compassion, with subtle wisdom discriminating and grasping onto the object, from the light of self-nature, the body is formed, from the five colors of the image, the colors of the external earth, water, fire, wind, and space are formed. In the aspect of essence, which is nothing, with the discriminating subtle wisdom of compassion acting as the seed, in the past, at the time of spontaneous accomplishment, the mind accustomed to the state of non-discrimination, with similar habits, focuses single-pointedly on the object that cannot be determined as either existent or non-existent, thus deluding into the birth place of neither existent nor non-existent. Then, the dormancy of the emptiness of mind awakens, abiding in the state of thinking there is nothing, thus deluding into the birth place of nothingness. Then, merely knowing and clarifying the mind, without examining anything else, thus deluding into the birth place of infinite consciousness. Then, like a clear sky, the mind abides in infinity, thus deluding into the birth place of infinite space. Then, in the emptiness of space, only the clarity of color as the object

From that appearing clarity, without conceptualization or intention, because the seeds of intention exist in a dormant state, it gradually becomes confused into the seventeen meditative form realms, such as Akanistha. Then, from the coarse mind, it also becomes confused into the coarser desire realm's twenty abodes. Secondly, the inner explanation of how confusion arises is: In "Vast Expanse of Clarity," it says, "Initially, it arises from six kinds of ignorance." That is, not knowing the characteristics of the three: essence, nature, and compassion. Essence is actual ignorance, nature is the object, and compassion is the adornment. Sentient beings of the three realms, without having committed even a hair's breadth of sin, wander in samsara. In "Refutation," it says, "The cause of confusion is ignorance; ignorance has three aspects." That is, the ignorance of self-identity, the co-emergent ignorance, and the imputed ignorance are the three causes. Through the cause's condition, the object's condition, and the clinging condition, confusion arises from the appearance of wisdom. Although wisdom itself is without confusion, confusion arises due to conditions, like the sun itself having no darkness or obscuration, but being obscured by clouds in between, the sun is not clear. Wisdom is obscured, and one wanders in the darkness of samsara. Furthermore, the cause's condition is that in the clear aspect of the empty essence, the self-radiance of wisdom exists as a halo of light. From the condition of awareness, the color of the wind of karma appears outwardly clear. Because it is not recognized as spontaneously accomplished wisdom, dualistic clinging arises. That is the beginning of samsara. In "Refutation," it says, "One cause, without a maker, is the root; not knowing it as one's own nature, this is the beginning of samsara." So, from what does confusion arise? In "String of Pearls," it says, "Because from the mind arises the mind of memory, the essence itself is stained by conceptualization." That is, the awareness that is the basis of appearance is like a mirror. Because it is not recognized as one's own nature, it becomes mind. Because mind and conceptualization are of the same essence, that itself is an obscuration, staining and defiling the awareness of self-born wisdom. Because that cause is clung to as a permanent self and as real, it is called the object's condition. From that mind, the clinging of the six consciousnesses appears as self-luminous, and thus the five elements arise. Because it is not recognized as the five wisdoms, clinging to that and relying on that, the five elements gather into one. That gathering together, one helps another.
