The earth vanishes! As the winds of karma flee, consciousness becomes confused and wavering. All the blood from the fine veins gathers into the life vein. At that time, the outer appearances become dim, like dusk. Consciousness gathers in the center of the heart, and when memory fades. From within the life vein, the first drop of blood strikes the heart, causing the eyes and mouth to turn pale. The second causes the head to convulse, and with a "ha" sound, the breath shoots out an arrow's length and ceases. The third drop of blood causes a "hik" sound, the breath shoots out an arm's length, and the outer breath ceases. At that time, consciousness is paralyzed by blood within the heart, and there is no memory or thought for the time it takes a person to eat a meal. The third is the bardo of dharmata, without fear because one knows that the enemy on the path is one's own friend, or with confidence like a mother and child meeting, through the distinctions of the senses. The final extreme is like a vase breaking. After that, the wind dissolves into consciousness, and the inner breath ceases. Consciousness dissolves into space, and the mind dissolves into the dharmadhatu, and just as that brief faintness clears. What is called the space of the peaceful dharmakaya, like the cloudless sky of late summer and early autumn, dawns as an appearance. Merely recognizing that, one is naturally liberated on the basis of primordial purity. After that, what is called space dissolving into clear light. From one's own two eyes, threads of light shoot forth into the expanse of space, which is called the rope of the eyes' unceasing compassion. By focusing consciousness on that, one is liberated upwards into the state of primordial purity. If one does not recognize that, the appearances that emanate from the light threads change without changing time, and the realm of clear light appears like the sun rising on the surface of a mirror. The outer earth, stones, mountains, rocks, plants, forests. The appearances of the sun, moon, and so forth all disappear. The inner, decisive, clear light's self-appearance is pure, subtle, and clear. Bright and radiant. The awe-inspiring radiance of self-nature. Like seeing the outer great ocean, everywhere pervading the edge of space, with each place flashing with light, all of existence blazing as a mass of light and rays. When lifted, it throbs, and when pressed, it is soft. One's own self appears as a luminous body of light, and in all directions, the enclosure of the five lights, covered by a great tent of curtains, all appearances are vast and magnificent, and appear without being fixed. At that time, the emanating appearances are all self-appearances.

Recognizing myself, I am liberated in self-manifestation. Then, the so-called merging into the luminosity of union is when those appearances manifest as a gathering of peaceful and wrathful mandalas. At that time, a liberation method occurs like seeing a lion stretching in the intermediate state of death. In an instant, the bodies of sound radiate, and as the wrathful mandala gradually appears in the form of sound, light, and rays, remembering the previously practiced instructions, the original luminosity of the base and the later-arising luminosity of the self-born son, the two luminosities of mother and son merge, and one is liberated in self-manifestation. Then, there is also the so-called appearance of great union. The peaceful mandala of the heart, five groups of five layers, gradually appear. On the first day, the essence of the pure realm of space, in the center of blue, with Vairochana as the main figure, hundreds of thousands of millions of mandalas of the five families appear. Knowing it as self-manifestation, one is liberated in the essence of Vairochana. Similarly, on the remaining four days, the mandalas of the other four families, each with their respective bodhisattvas, consorts, and gatekeepers, appear in their respective directions. The fivefold mandalas of the groups are countless hundreds of thousands of millions, so that in all directions, above and below, there are five families fully endowed, and with the consorts, they are tenfold endowed. These also, with the distinctions of the elements and wisdoms, each one is tenfold endowed, thus being a hundredfold endowed. These then appear a hundredfold in the ten directions, thus being a thousandfold endowed. From the essence of these, again in the ten directions, that many appear, thus being a hundred thousandfold endowed. The bodies of the Buddhas arising from the appearances of these are inconceivable, shining brightly everywhere that space pervades, beautiful and magnificent, tall and adorned with exquisite arrangements. At that time, one should remember the instructions of the three key points: entering is the key point of knowing, liberation is the key point of the body, and ultimate attainment is the key point of recognition. The first also has two aspects: when awareness enters into light, from one's own heart, a ray of light, extremely thin, like a coiled thread, connects to the hearts of the deities of the mandala, and on that ray of light, countless tiny bindus appear. At that time, placing awareness in the hearts of the deities of the mandala, and abiding in the state of clarity and emptiness, one is liberated, inseparable from the body of the mandala. Secondly, when light enters into awareness, from the hearts of the deities of the mandala, a ray of light also radiates, and then re-collects, merging into one's own heart in an instant.
