Investigation: What is called mind, the knower and changer who experiences all happiness and suffering, from where does it arise, from external and internal environments and beings? If it arises from any of the external four elements, can it be found by breaking each of them down into atoms and searching? If it arises from the internal self, can it be found by searching through its parts? If it arises from emptiness, does the place of arising exist? If it arises from appearance, can its object be found? In short, examine the mind that is being sought outwardly, and look inwardly at the mind that is seeking, constantly questioning and repeating until the self-face is seen, free from all identifications of essence. Secondly, investigating the place of dwelling: As before, where does it dwell, in external and internal environments and beings, parts of the body, etc.? If it cannot be established in any of these ways by examining and analyzing it in terms of shape, color, function, or essence, then by looking back at the knowing consciousness, although the consciousness is clear and apparent, since its own nature is not established, repeat until it is determined to be without foundation or root. Thirdly, investigating the place of going: When the mind suddenly arises and disappears, where does it go? By investigating, there is no place to go in external and internal environments and beings, appearance and emptiness, existence and non-existence, etc. The nature of the mind, which is the subject, is also free from all identifications of essence, so since the place of going and the mind that goes are not established, repeat until it is determined to be free from awareness and emptiness, coming and going. The necessity of these is threefold: commonly, it purifies the sins of the mind and pacifies obstacles; especially, it reverses the mind's clinging, so one does not fall into samsara; ultimately, it transforms the mind into the vajra dharmakaya, inseparable from it. Thus, in "Vast Expanse of Luminosity" it says: "The preliminaries of body, speech, and mind, are common, special, and ultimate, know that there are three necessities." As it is said. Also, the first two necessities just mentioned are common, and the last one is made supreme, and it is also explained as two, as it says in "Consequence": "Here there are two kinds of necessity, examine by the distinction of common and supreme." As it is said. Thirdly, settling into the natural state has two aspects: the actual settling into the natural state, and restoring to its original condition. The first part has: explaining the necessity of settling into the natural state, and the manner of how to settle. The first is, as it says in "Vast Expanse of Luminosity": "The arising and confusion of body, speech, and mind, these

"Let go, return to the natural state." Thus it is said. That is to say, for the deluded thoughts of samsara to be abandoned, and for the virtuous thoughts of the antidote, whichever arises, one should focus awareness single-pointedly on whatever aspect is clear, and through meditation, the deluded thoughts will transform, thereby becoming non-conceptual. For example, muddy water, when left undisturbed, will become clear. If one initially tries to forcefully suppress thoughts, not only will the mind not abide, but it will also become an obstacle, making it difficult to generate samadhi. Therefore, the Ornament of the Sutras also says, "Because attachment and so forth are in that very thing, because of properly applying the mind to it, therefore liberation is attained, therefore one will definitely emerge from them." And the Two Examinations says, "Attachment binds the world, but attachment itself can also liberate." Thus, skillfully and expediently it is proclaimed. Furthermore, "Relying on an object, non-object arises; relying on non-object, non-object arises; therefore, the object is accomplished as non-object; therefore, object and non-object should be known as equal." As it is said in the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes. Thus, the previously mentioned distinctions between samsara and nirvana, etc., for the ordinary appearances, the habitual clinging appearances that are coarse and easily arise in the mind, and then the inner distinctions and consolidations, practicing skills, etc., the subtle ones, gradually gather them in, thereby binding the sense consciousnesses so that they do not stray outwards, and thereby causing the mind, the six consciousnesses, to gather as one, and causing the mind that scatters outwards to be pacified. Then, for the support of the six objects related to the uncompounded dharma, one does not fixate on them, but rather abides in whatever aspect of self-nature, emptiness, what should be abandoned, and the antidote, without any conceptualization, that is to say, naturalness is the meaning of unfabrication, and letting go is allowing it to naturally abide in that, therefore it is said to let go, return to the natural state. Secondly, in the Ornament of Clear Realization it says, "At this time, the key points of body, speech, and mind, the one endowed with yoga should let go." And in the Subsequent Explanation it says, "Then the three, body, speech, and mind, should skillfully let go." Thus it is said, on a comfortable cushion, the body and mind in a lotus position or squatting position, or any comfortable posture, remain natural, without moving. Speech goes without saying, even the breath is not modified, but remains natural. The mind is not pleased
