It should also be written with vermilion and good incense. If the sign of the life-form is missing, then perform a hundred tsog offerings to one's own lama. If the right hand is missing, then make a substitute figure one cubit long with the head of a lion with its mouth open from flour of seven kinds of grains, put a plaque with the number of years on it, and send it to the crossroads in the north. If the left hand is missing, then put the teeth of three black animals—a black tiger, a black pig, and a black dog—into a substitute figure of a vixen, fill it with a fierce offering mixed with urine, and throw it into the water. If the right leg below the knee is missing, then at sunset, burn sandalwood or juniper branches equal to the number of years. If the left leg is missing, then in the heart of a white substitute figure one cubit long, insert a tiger skin plaque with the number of years written on it, and send it to a haunted temple at dawn. If the right side of the head is missing, then mix nine kinds of soil from a burial ground with the fruit of a black tree, put one's own hair and pieces of clothing into a black closed gau box, insert a plaque with "The king of the year carries this sign," etc., written with the names of the twelve years on the back of the gau box, also insert various thorns, and send it to the cemetery at midnight. If the left side is missing, then put the bones of three creatures—a human, a horse, and a dog—wrapped in pieces of cloth into the heart of a fierce offering of twenty-five kinds of grains, dig a hole eighty paces away at dusk on the eleventh day, put the offering in it, call out one's own name, weep three times, and bury it. If everything below the neck is missing, then make a homa offering of southeast thorns equal to the number of years, gradually burn them, and recite raṃ (藏文:རཾ།,梵文天城体: रं, 梵文罗马拟音: raṃ, 汉语字面意思: Seed syllable) the number of years. If even the neck is missing, then smear the corpse with charcoal, tie the hair on the crown of the head, write one's own zodiac sign and the name of the celestial year on a four-finger-wide piece of paper, write raṃ (藏文:རཾ།,梵文天城体: रं, 梵文罗马拟音: raṃ, 汉语字面意思: Seed syllable) yaṃ (藏文:ཡཾ།,梵文天城体: यं, 梵文罗马拟音: yaṃ, 汉语字面意思: Seed syllable) laṃ (藏文:ལཾ།,梵文天城体: लं, 梵文罗马拟音: laṃ, 汉语字面意思: Seed syllable) khaṃ (藏文:ཁཾ།,梵文天城体: खं, 梵文罗马拟音: khaṃ, 汉语字面意思: Seed syllable) on the four sides, attach it to one's own nose, fumigate it with guggul incense, run in the four directions at midnight on the ninth day, say many irrelevant things such as "You take this," and bury the paper in the cemetery. If the upper body is missing, then set fire to it and burn the plaque with the names of the twelve years. If the lower body is missing, then go to the cemetery and burn incense made of various bones. If the entire right side of the body is missing, then make stupas, the number of which is equal to the number of years. If the left side is missing, then wear red clothes and recite many dharanis. If the connection between heaven and earth is broken, then do as much good as possible and read many scriptures. Lion

If the medicinal rain does not fall, perform many mandala rituals. If trees break at the boundary of mountains and plains, prepare medicines for each of the containers. If the steam of water turns blue-red, make a twelve-year-old figure out of clay and change it into five colors. Perform one saccha and one burnt offering. Perform one tiger homa and carry it to the northeast charnel ground when the sun is completely red. Scatter black scraps mixed with various grains and iron-copper powder in the four directions. For the red one with spots, offer a burnt offering of your own scent for the number of years, plant a turquoise dagger and a red silk banner, and carry it together with various bones to the great road in the east. If there is no steam from feces, write the seed syllable that appears on the horse's skull, look west when the sun is a spear's length away, and utter countless horse sounds. For the sound of wind in the ears, offer a measured amount of various foods as torma, along with the names of the twelve years, and carry it to the base of a tree in the west. If there is no sound, contemplate yaṃ in the heart, stare upwards, and have someone sprinkle cleansing water on the crown of the head. If the tree leaves rise, strive for tsog and virtuous deeds. By performing and examining these rituals, death will surely be averted in about seven times the number of years. The secret instruction for averting death. Completed by the great teacher Śrī Siṃha. Gya gya gya! May you meet a karmically fortunate one! The definitive prophecy of the Buddha's ultimate intention. From the profound and vast meanings of the great arrangement, this essence of the definitive secret instruction, which completely reverses all worldly battles, is the immaculate protector of all, an emanation of Mañjuśrī himself. Having condensed the definitive essence into one, the lama protector, who reveals the self-arisen appearance by dissolving the thick darkness of delusion into the light of wisdom, I prostrate to you, the immaculate emanation of Mañjuśrī. This body of mine, which has accumulated habitual tendencies in the realm called Śoṣa-vyūha-liṅga, is the mind of a virtuous householder of the Chinese race, in whose womb the appearance is made clear. I was born in the city called Śo-'khyam-nag-po. Then, at the age of fifteen, near the Bodhi tree, from the learned teacher Hastibhala, I listened to letters, calculations, grammar, and treatises. For three years, the fame of the learned...
