Oṃ! For example, it is easy for a fire to start in the lower room of a city, but if it spreads to the roof, it is difficult to extinguish. After a sign of death appears, first offer to the Lama and the Three Jewels, and do whatever it takes to accomplish the work of accumulating merit. Then, to avert disturbances of the elements, use the wheel and the seed syllables of the elements by writing the letters on Chinese paper or palm leaves. The wind wheel has four spokes, and at the center and spokes of the five petals write (Tibetan: ཡཾ, Devanagari: यं, Romanized Sanskrit: yaṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Yang), and on the circumference write Āli. Similarly, for fire write (Tibetan: རཾ, Devanagari: रं, Romanized Sanskrit: raṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Rang), for earth write (Tibetan: ལཾ, Devanagari: लं, Romanized Sanskrit: laṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Lang), for water write (Tibetan: ཁཾ, Devanagari: खं, Romanized Sanskrit: khaṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Khang), for space write (Tibetan: ཨེ, Devanagari: ऐ, Romanized Sanskrit: ai, Literal Chinese meaning: Ai), and on the circumference write Āli. The substance for ransoming demons is a ransom effigy made of zanba or roasted zanba, the size of the number of years, painted in the five colors of the elements: blue-black for (Tibetan: བདུད་, Chinese: demon), red for (Tibetan: བཙན་, Chinese: tsen), white for (Tibetan: རྒྱལ་པོ་, Chinese: king), yellow for (Tibetan: གཉན་, Chinese: nyen), green for (Tibetan: ཀླུ་, Chinese: klu), and mottled for (Tibetan: ཤི་འདྲེ་, Chinese: dead ghost). Mix in your own dirt, pieces of clothing, saliva, hair and nails, and urine, add wool, silk, and various feathers of inauspicious omens (owls, ghouls, etc.), and stick them on the ransom effigy. In front of the effigy, place one torma of each corresponding color, and place a zanba wine offering for each year. Then bless all of these with the six-syllable mantra, and recite: "Take it, take it, powerful ones! May you release, pacify, and liberate desire, attachment, infatuation, memory, grasping, thought, and discrimination!" After reciting, throw the ransom effigy and the wheel into a large river, and this will avert death for three years. Before a sign of death appears, doing this once every three years is excellent." After bestowing the five empowerments, if the fingernails are not shiny, teach the Dharma to seven monks and offer wealth. If they have taken vows, repeat them; if they have not, they should take them. Wearing yellow clothes can avert it. If there is a cataract in the eye, make white tsatsas equal to the number of years, circumambulate them seven times, throw them into a large river, and without taking steps equal to the number of years, do not look back. If the hair on the back of the head turns upwards, make tsampa from black beans, make a fierce ransom one cubit long, and in the heart of the ransom, put pieces of lung tang (a kind of herb) equal to the number of years, and write your name. Make it black with your own hair and cloth from your own clothes. At a place one hundred and twenty-one steps from your dwelling, dig a triangular black pit, recite "Ram" (Tibetan: རཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: रं, Sanskrit Romanization: raṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Fire) the same number of times as your age, then throw away the ransom, and say, "Black demon, take this! The burden is heavy! The burden is heavy!" Say this three times, then urinate and cover it with earth. Do not look back and run away. If there is a mark on the ankle, when the shadow of the sun is small, face west, sit naked, and insert a dog's tail into your buttocks. Excrete feces in front of you, eat a mouthful, and make a dog sound, repeat three times. If dirt appears at the base of the vagina, wear a sheepskin, face east, and make a sheep sound three times. If the nose is collapsed, contemplate "A" (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Romanization: a, Chinese literal meaning: No) at the tip of the nose, recite "A" twenty-one times, and bathe with nine kinds of water. If the limbs cannot be stretched, draw the wheel of the five elements on the limbs as before with Tibetan ink, and then wash them with blessed water as before. If the pupils look upwards, teach the Dharma to monks, accumulate children equal to the number of years, hold a feast, and wear red clothes. If the cheeks are sunken, make yellow tsatsas and count them, make water offerings and fire offerings, make green banners equal to the number of years, and recite "E" (Tibetan: ཨེ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ए, Sanskrit Romanization: e, Chinese literal meaning: Come) equal to the number of years. If the breath is rough, recite the heart mantra of wind on a piece of brown sugar and eat it.
