Some say that reciting verses like these once is enough. In some texts, "From now on, do not kill" is changed to "At that time, do not kill," which seems to be just an idea arising from observing the fast like a householder. However, many others have not changed it, and since the time limit has already been mentioned above, it is good to say "from now on." When taking vows from the Khenpo, there is no need to separately ask the Khenpo for permission. Regarding the time limits for taking and abandoning the vows of Sojong (Uposatha), the Vaibhashika of the Hinayana tradition believes that one takes the vows before sunrise and abandons them before sunrise the next day, that is, when dawn breaks, darkness fades, and the sun shines on the peaks of the great mountains in the southeast of Jambudvipa, one abandons the vows at that time. Apart from this one day and one night, the vows of Sojong do not truly arise, and they believe that observing them separately during the day and night is merely virtuous conduct and not a true taking of vows, as stated in the Abhidharmakosha and its commentaries. The Sautrantika believes that the daytime is from before sunrise this morning until sunset, and the nighttime is from sunset until sunrise tomorrow, thus believing that vows can truly arise separately during the day and night. These regulations regarding taking and abandoning Sojong vows are mainly intended for lay practitioners. For the ordained, the eight precepts are always the foundation. The special regulations for Sojong are mostly for observing one day and one night. Generally, Sojong refers to both ordained and non-ordained individuals. The eight-precept Sojong for non-ordained individuals, limited to one day and one night, is Nyungne (fasting), while taking vows until the end of life is the Upasaka (lay devotee) with full vows, just like the way the wanderer Semyon Ring (Gelongma Palmo) initially entered the Dharma in the presence of the Tathagata Buddha, and like the great Indian scholar Chandragomin. The Sojong that is not Gomi's also includes one month, one year, etc. On the eighth, fifteenth, and thirtieth days of every month, one can protect the vows and take them all at once from the Khenpo. This is the view of Jowo Je (Atisha), and many people have practiced it this way. Some wise people believe that this can only be considered virtuous conduct and does not truly confer the vows. Like the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika mentioned above, I also believe that this does not contradict the views of each school.
